Default Q: Dial up.. Just woundering

Hey.. i haven’t used dialup for a few years now.. i still have cable. but got some dialup and once and a while use it to save my cable limit..

just wondering when i connect with a 56kb modem it only ever connects at 48kbs?

and if its 48kbs why can i only ever download at 4 or 5kb's

cause the 48kbs is kilobits and the 4 or 5kbs is kilo bytes. 8 bits = 1 byte

its a different bit rate.

your connection is at 56 Kilo"BIT"/second

But your download is at 5 Kilo "BYTE"/second

So its running at a fair speed.

Hope this is right, cant remember exactly but its something like that.

What they are basically saying is that a kilobit and a kilobyte are similar to, say, Centermeters and Meters.

100 cm = 1m

8 kb = 1Kb (not the difference in the K)

65 kilobit Modems would sound far less impressive if they were called 7 Kilobyte modems (which is the maximum you can get out of a 56k modem (56 / 8))
