When does some hard driving start to really hurt a car?

Let's presume two new identical cars with no mods.. And both serviced on schedule

Let's say both cars fg xr6t..

How much punishment can they take before one car starts showing abuse over the other... What issues would more than likely arise. Not talking about consumables like tyres or brakes but driveline or trim bits etc

Xr6t #1. Driven moderately for 2 years for 40,000km serviced regularly, warmed up of a morning, mixture of highway and start stop driving, rarely sees redline or wot driving, no track days or drag passes.

Xr6t #2. Driven hard for 2 years for 40,000km, sees redline/WOT driving on a daily basis, done a few track days, done 50 passes down the quarter mile, mixture of highway and stop start driving, also serviced regularly.

Would one car be in significantly better condition or will regular servicing enable the car to handle some punishment for relatively little wear n tear?

Is 40,000km too early to uncover increased wear? Would it likely show up earlier but a little later? At 80,000km?

When would heavy driving causing increased wear start to rear its ugly head? What sort of issues would likely surface?

My ba2 xr6t was driven mostly as per your car 2. It was showing big signs of wear at 45000km. Gotta love company cars

Lots of variables.
Clutch wear would be higher, turbo might have wear, brake wear...

I drove my Festiva like car 1 and it felt and drove 'as new' after 10yrs and 2oo+k km.

I then tried to replace it with cars with half the kays and they were well and truly worn out.

The question comes about for a few reasons...

I get a new company car replaced every few thousand km... I drive it pretty hard. I'm just thinking of the next owner who will be buying an as new car. Just thinking if the car will show these signs of wear longer term etc

Also if we were to compare ex-chaser cars vs sedately driven cars, we could see if the hard driving hurts the cars

I hope you disclose your driving style to your company so they can then pass it on to the next owner !!!!!! otherwise that would be pure dishonest now wouldn’t it.

I think it really depends on the driver's lack of mechanical sympathy for starters.
If the car is suffering, this will be the quickest method of killing it.
There's been a number of race drivers over the years that can drive a car hard and fast, while looking after it, and there are others that simply should stay on push bikes.

good question.. I've been wondering the same myself I've restored my EB but have noticed it's thumping into second and third harder (dont think it's the s5) I figure if I drive hard with it shifting like this it may wear out the clutches etc so would be good to know.

Driving hard in general should be ok for everything mechanical if the oils aren't burnt/contaminated.. but balljoints, bushes, shocks and springs will wear out quicker.

I always walk away from buying cars when there is more rubber up under the rear wheel wells than there is on the rims.

Other than that I’d need a professional to help me out with what is worn unless there are obvious drivetrain issues.

If both cars were fitted with a centri then it would be impossible for any harm to come to either of them.

I have seen cars that were driven hard do big KM with no more problems than any plod about ones.
Abuse and thrashed is the real problem be it driven by a fool idiot plod or moronic idiot fool.

I'm going to go on a journey and drive as many xr6t fg as possible. All with around the same km.. Ill plot down the issues as I see them and be certain to record the original owners of the cars..

I'll report back on my findings. I'm pretty sure we will see a correlation with communal/emergency vehicles by far showing elevated signs of degradation.

Are you serious? Of course the emergency vehicles will have increased wear... you're not comparing apples with apples... emergency vehicles get driving within an inch of their lives, get launched over gutter/kerbs at 80km/h, what are you trying to prove?

A rev a day keeps the mechanic away.


I'd prefer a car that has been warmed up correctly and utilised its whole rev range, than a car that has just plodded around at no more than 2,500 RPM its whole life.

My BMW has 142,000 kms and I've driven it hard for the last 2 years. It's always warmed up correctly everytime I drive it.

By driving hard, I'm talking about just getting up to speed quickly, using all of the rev range when driving etc etc. Not track days and hard launching/dragging.
I'm on my original clutch and the whole driveline feels perfect still.

Same with all of my rides, no problems here.

Cops don't deserve to have their vehicles replaced every 40,000km, I don't care what people say they don't drive their vehicles anywhere near as hard as Paramedics and they go for 250,000km in Vic before they get a new one.

Ambulances see many more lights and sirens action than what cop cars do, day in, day out.

I looked at buying a few ex police vehicles a few years back, straight from the cops to that dealer on parramatta road

First was a bf xr6t, had around 40,000km on it, interior looked like they had let a wild dog in the car and chewed up everything, trim was in poor condition. Driving it the front suspension was all clunky and the steering felt off. Had a few scrapes and bits that had been repaired on the outside.

I thought well maybe it was just a rough car so took out the VE ss copper parked right next to it, again 40,000km. No better than the bf, just completely destroyed. I just don't know what the coppers do to them. You would expect that sort of wear on cars with 300,000km. 1 police km = 7 civilian km with respect to wear.

There are members on here with cars that have km nearing 200,000km and the car feel beautiful n tight. It's because they don't treat them like rally cars every day.

You could destroy something the second you push the car hard (first time driving). Once you destroy something on the car, the car will show something has been destroyed.
