since my last post i successfully wired up my cd player, and just thought i'd add a bit of info here in case anyone else needs to know. (some of this is probably obvious but oh well.)
firstly, the tape deck i took out was the "security coded" standard ford tape deck (phillips?), to remove the unit you take out the ashtray and there will be 2 screws which you need to remove. gently pull the whole front of the dash out (which the tape deck is screwed onto), there will be tabs which click in and out. unscrew the tape deck from this and also unscrew the brackets on either side of the tape deck. unclip all wire plugs from behind the unit, you will be left with just a white combination plug with 7 wires coming out of it. four of these wires are speaker wires (to the front speakers), and the other three are ACC, power and (i think) lighting switch terminal. you can either cut off the white plug, solder or clip the wires from the cd unit into the white plug, or tap into the wires. cut about 3-5mm of the plastic from each wire (technical jargon is just not coming to me right atm), and wrap the wire ends from the cd unit you are installing around the bare wires, wrap individually with electrical tape. the part i really needed to know, is what each of the wires in the dashboard was. the wire colours are as follows: purple - front left speaker (+) blue/yellow - front left speaker (-) blue - front right speaker (+) blue/white - front right speaker (-) red/blue - power (always connected) red - ACC blue/black - lighting switch terminal * * not too sure on this one, but the cd unit i was installing (a reasonably-old pioneer DEH-P4350) had an orange/white wire that was to be connected to the lighting switch terminal, i think that's the right connection for it. anyway the other ones are correct. if you're not sure, get some kind of power tester or circuit tester and touch each wire (with the battery terminals connected), if you get an indication of power then connect your yellow lead (or the power lead, connecting the cd unit permanently to power regardless of the ignition switch position) to this one. probably nobody will read this but anyway .... red blue/black blue/red |

Ok everything is hooked up now and in my laser both the blue/red and blue/black wires coming from the dash are controlled by the lights. So as it is My CD player won't turn on without the lights being on. :
I even tried to splice the yellow wire (continuous current) into the car lighter but that ended in the same result, won't work without the lights on. So I ended up having to route a wire direct from the positive battery terminal. Just an fyi for anyone else who may be having this prob. |
