Default BA falcon $5990 - 2nd hand car market is crazy

Just bought a Jan 04 BA falcon today. 190k, log books, servicing at Ford etc. Bought it at a car yard in Brisbane for $5990 driveaway. Car has no dents at all. Has bonnet and headlight protectors and floormats. The dealer said the guy traded it on a low k xr6 turbo. Higher kays but would appear to be highway running as there are no scrapes on the wheel covers, no car park dents but the bonnet protector and headlight protectors have a few marks (as does the front bumper). The car is immac. It had only just come in and hadn't even been detailed yet.

Wanted a corallo for the wife but Even if I pay 4 grand for lpg on the BA, I'll get the 2k back from Govt. and all up cost is around 8 grand. Cheaper than the rough 04 corollas I looked at.

12 months ago I bought an ef fairmont with 200k as a work car. It was immac but a 95 model with higher kays. I payed 3500 because anything else around at that time was either overpriced or Krap. Now I can have my pick of private au's for 3500.

Even looked at a few magnas (te - tj shape). Seen a couple under 2grand with RWC and rego.

Is the used car market suffering as a whole or does it just seem to be the bigger cars? Petrol prices and the incredible amount of standard kit you get in even the cheapest new cars must make larger second hand cars much less attractive.

Anyone else seen a sudden drop in prices recently?

Prices seem to drop when I'm selling, but for some reason I can never find a real bargain to buy at the same time :(

My missus stopped by a dealers yard the other day looking at a 20k used Patrol and out of curiosity asked what she'd get for our AUII Futura wagon, 170k factory dual fuel etc. straight, rust free with accessories and was offered 2k as is, 3k if she spent the $800 to get the NSW rego (still SA rego). She nearly choked on the drink she was slurping down at the time. Looks like we'll be running the wagon into the ground.

There is a Ford dealer near me thats selling BF XT 07 models for $17,990.00 drive away. Glad I'm not buying a new car again, they'll all be half price after 12 months...

yeah!

I had a 190e mercedes for ages. It was a spot on low k car and I just couldn't get a bite. Had to let it go for $2500 a few years ago but when I wanted another one for the wife when we had our first kid, I couldn't find a reasonable one for twice that price.

It's all second hand cars but large cars especially due to their perceived excessive fuel usage.

My opinion is it's due to the previously good state of the economy for the last ten years or so. New car sales have been much stronger than ever before leaving the used car market over saturated. The law of supply and demand then comes into play, too much supply and little demand results in extremely low prices. Great for the buyer but bad for the seller.

If we end up in a recession new car sales will slump and the used market will wake up again but that wont be for many years.

I know of a 2002 BA XT sedan (with 140k and a couple of bumps on a door) selling for $4750 at Pickles auctions in Brisbane a few weeks ago. I couldn't believe just how cheap they're going for at the moment. If it had of been a wagon, I would have been right onto it.

A few months ago, my Grandfather decided to replace his 1980 VC Commodore wagon with a 2004 Corolla Ascent hatch (which cost @ $14k)
Wish he'd told us. I could have gotten him a really nice BA/BF or even a VZ for that. Way more options than the Corolla has.
(He grumbles about the Corolla at least twice a week :P

Used car prices are crazy at the moment. (especially for the 6's & V8's)

Used market as a whole is really down right now for reasons noted by toast man above. Too many new cars bought in recent times, and current downturn (but not full blown recession) has meant agressive pricing/deals on new cars so it only gets worse.

The large cars are being hit moreso but mostly i think its just the crazy numbers of them that get turned over young. People see the fuel bill each week, the cheap new small cars around and jump ship. Not like the old days when you kept your car for years and years....there are probably more BF fairmonts for sale right now at rock bottom prices than EF fairmonts??? Combine this with fleets dumping cars as usual and there is a real glut.

One of my mates got a BA futura 2004, excellent condition, 80k on the odo for 8k all up....highway car too. Bluetooth kit in the car and towball.... crazy stuff......

Oh my!

I hold no hope for my car to keep its value. I only bought it for $8k back in June (has 145k on the clock now). It's definitely a buyer's market at the moment.

Yeah you gotta feel for guys that are trying to sell their cars at the moment. Trade ins are rock bottom as a result also....private sales will go a insulting prices. If you can afford the rego/insurance, then run them for as long as you can get away with (BBQ gas it if you have to)...... never sell it! LOL! Make it a race car or something....

To borrow a line from Charlton Heston (he was referring to guns but it works for cars too....)

If you want to take my car, you can take it from my cold dead hands.....out:

Sold my EL for $1500 last week... I think that was a good price to get! (Car didn't have much wrong with it either, no dents, etc).

Small car depreciation is nowhere near as bad as that for large cars such as Falcons...

Corolla prices are always over inflated, most of the time you can get a 4 cylinder Camry of the same age/k's/condition for much less than the originally cheaper Coroll

With fuel prices, the 6 and 8 cyl 'daily driver' markets are looking pretty sour

Nice pick-up Bestfare. Must be rich operators up there to take the BA off the road before it's time?

Spotted a fair few X-Cab BA Wagons on eBay go for between $1700 and $2700.

not really,
it was off the road for 8 weeks after an incident in witch time it was repaired by a non-taxi smash place and they replaced the car rather then wait.
their replacement was only about 9k for an 06 petrol... CRAZY

Got my 06 BF SR with 3900km on the clock for $21k a year ago here in Perth (private sale). Car in perfect nic.

I was planning on buying brand new before I saw this one and snapped it up - what really surprised me was that it had already been on the market for a month with no takers!
