Amongst other things. Well actually its a crazy petition to join America and Australia but I'm assuming it would mean more cars.
http://wh.gov/t8vW I signed it - I can dream can't I? Imagine the positives - more political choices than just Julie and Tone. Might get our guns back. Probably be compensated for our years without guns and the NRA will have a bounty put on Lil Johny. Hopefully Dog will rough him up then read the bible to him for hours. Cheaper fuel. Hmm just realised creationism might be one huge negative. Dangit. |

Its a joke but hell no.
I don't want to lose my paid sick leave, paid annual leave, paid public holidays. America is only a good place to be if you're rich and have money to spare, for the rest of us, we're better off under our laws. |

Nobody wants to lose those things. But then the business goes under/overseas because it can't compete.

Particularly in our case with the ambulances, we've cut costs on the ambulance by putting Australians out of work and paying some Chinese person slave labour wages but the tax payer is still paying the same price for the van even though quality has dropped with the extra "savings". To achieve those "savings", we have to re-work every bit of furniture that goes into the ambulance, which blows out our labour hours, costing the company more money than just having it made in Australia in the first place. But its "cheaper" having it made overseas. I unload it off the container, 1/3rd of it goes out of the container, onto the ute to sims metal, the other 2/3rds is reworked by us in the shop, then sent out to be powdercoated again before it can go into the van. The first container, the whole thing went into sims metal because it was ****. One container is 15 ambulances. Every container afterwards has had to be reworked, and at least powder coated, because Australian white is different from Chinese white for some reason. Like everything else, goes overseas to cut costs and "compete" but the customer still pays the same price at the register. You will never "compete" with 3rd world labour wages, unless you're willing to get paid $40 a month. So you have to make your product better than the cheap Chinese crap to keep your customer. So do it once and do it right. Accountants should be in there with mechanics, used car salesmen and lawyers. You want to save money? Cut out the politics in the work place and consult with the people who do the work. Last edited by Franco Cozzo; 07-05-2013 at 11:25 PM. |

There is more to wages than running a business I assume, procedures, efficiency, people, management etc. At the end of the day if you want to run a business in Australia you're going to have a high wages cost, end of story. Open up in Kenya, you get a 10 year tax break where you pay 0% taxes, then close the factory down and open up in another African country where you get another 10 years with no tax obligation. Its wrong, plain and simple. The pin stripe mafia should be shot, exploit countries and people in order to get out of paying more money. Give it time, eventually the Chinese people will want a western life style, they will want the luxuries, how long before they crack it and get the wheels in motion for change? Will it be so cheap to manufacture in China then? Some companies are already moving manufacturing from China to Bangladesh because of the even less wages. I don't know, I don't run a business, I don't have the solution. This is my opinion. Flappist is a business owner, maybe he can give us some insight if he likes of the problems he faces in his position and his company that are unique to Australia, which he wouldn't have if he outsourced to India/Phillipines. not to mention medicare and centrelink in the US no insurance and you can be left to die in the street. you loose your job and you only get limited unemployment then if unable to find a job you have to resort to crime to live.
no thanks

Multitude of cars, bikes and consumer stuff all at low prices. I'd probably be allowed to have a semi-auto riffle again, concealed carry laws might be available. The military would have better toys and hopefully nukes. A constitution which actually protected an individuals freedom. What are the down sides again?

What cultural identity? As a nation we spent the first 150+ years of our history desperately clinging to our British heritage, the next 50 trying to emulate US pop culture and now we are divided and segregated by additional cultures and languages, without any cohesion whatsoever. We're a cultural ghetto.

Actually I would have agreed with that a while back. I used to think our cultural identity started and finished with beer, noise and ockerism. But, recently I have begun to appreciate a more subtle Australian culture. It gets buried by the loud obnoxious version but its there. |

Would that mean we could finally invade New Zealand?
I will sign ONLY on the condition they agree to put back all the ‘U’s and take out all the ‘Z’s.

America hasn't fared too well in recent times. They could treat the country like General Motors- file chapter 11, throw all of their debt and bad assets into one basket, their creditors (read: China) can fight over those scraps, they might get 2 cents on the dollar, who cares. Re-brand the place as Australia, start from a clean slate with no debt, throw in a metric system for good measure (that's a pun). They can enjoy our way of life... and our superior credit rating. Perfect

Yeh, its a complex issue. I would agree in principal but I dont think gun laws mean a lack of guns. Plenty of illegal guns and people who dont take any notice of the law hiding them wherever you go. I prefer that a citizen that passes reasonable requirements is given some credit and responsibility. And allowed to be armed if they wish. I dont mind our current laws so much except that many requirements don't make sense and don't help make the community safer. On purely practical grounds the current laws create more work for the police and law abiding owners for little benefit. |

According to data from the Australian Sporting Shooters Association (ASSA) there are more guns around (legally) now than what there was pre-1996 so I don't know where you get your information from?

There are good and bad things about both countries.
Jobs and innovation: USA is great for entrepreneurs and creating jobs out of nowhere. They welcome innovation while Aussies are too cautious at times and great ideas head overseas. They regulate most things too little. We over regulate some things. There arent too many things where they have things over us. Their continent is just more fertile and has more arable land. Their fixed term election thing is also good, 4 year terms are good for a president. Its crazy that our elections are roughly every 3 yrs and roughly for 3 years.
