Exclamation Toyota Refuses to Hand over Raptor Name Rights.

"THE Ford Ranger Raptor may need to become the Ford Ranger Cougar in Australia if the car maker’s last-ditch bid to own the rights to the name of its most performance honed trade ute yet falls completely flat.

Ford is facing an anxious four-month wait as it and the Raptor name’s current trademark owner, Toyota’s truck division Hino, sit out a “cooling-off” period that will culminate in the current trademark’s expiry in late June.
Hino’s extra six-month hold over the Raptor name comes on top of another similarly lengthy extension to the cooling-off period granted earlier last year by IPAustralia, the government body that oversees trademark disputes here.

IPAustralia said the second extension to Hino’s hold on the Raptor name came “with the consent of both parties, and remains ongoing (meaning that for the moment the matter is not progressing)”. In other words, neither party is yet prepared to give in to the other.

The trademark dispute came to a head last year after Ford applied to have the Raptor name removed from Hino’s grasp on the grounds that Hino had not used the name since it was first registered in 1994, and was therefore no longer in use. Hino, though, thinks otherwise.
The Ford Ranger Raptor, featuring a 156kW/500Nm twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine, hasn’t yet set an arrival date in Australia, although it’s believed to be loosely slated for late this year.

If Ford doesn’t get access to the Raptor name, it does have a hold over other dormant trademarks including “Cougar”, “Expedition”, and the largely unsuitable for what will be a straight-road specialist capable of 170km/h “Mountaineer”. It could even dig into its list of retired Ford Performance Vehicles names: How good does “Ford Ranger Typhoon” sound?
Ford is remaining tight-lipped as to what its naming options are for the as-yet unnamed hi-po Ranger, and is yet to respond to Wheels’ request for comment.
This isn’t the first time, either, that Toyota and Ford have tried to bloody each others’ nose over what to name a vehicle. Late last year the Japanese car-making giant refused to release “Edge” to Ford, forcing the US brand to use the name “Endura” – an orphan in the Ford world – for the replacement for its five-seat, locally made Territory SUV.

Well that’s ok really. A 2.0 doesn’t really suit the Raptor name. Not sure cougar fits either. Maybe the pussy cat?

Ford have filed the application to remove the trade mark on the grounds of non-use - something that they should have done with the Edge trade mark too.

It'd be interesting to see what Hino come up with as evidence of use. If they can't, then their trade mark will be removed and Ford will be free to use it.

It would be idiotic for Ford to use the Cougar name on anything other than a small car targeted at women. We all know what the current day reference of what a Cougar is.

I don't know why the courts granted Hino a six month delay in the first place,
Hino (Toyota) definitely stalling....this should have been a done deal.

Not the courts. IP Australia. And they can only do so with the consent of both parties - i.e., Ford has consented to it.

Good looking cast.

Ranger Hal was a real park ranger who hosted a Saturday morning TV show in the Washington DC area when I was a young child.

He was well liked by all.

This is a Ford RAPTOR. Has 600HP not 210HP. Just keep it as ranger, or maybe BABY RAPTOR

Agree on this, this new RR seems like a great vehicle, but I don't think its worthy of the Raptor badge.

I suspect in their current forms the ranger will beat it's big brother on the tracks it's designed for.

Hennessey VelociRaptor $505k! for a 6x6,
so a 4x4 should be a bargain at 450ish?

Sorry, was half asleep last night.
arronm suggested the raptor had 600hp.
chrisand sharon thought it was 450hp.
Theyre both correct, one of them costs $500,000 through Hennessey though.

Considering Raptors weren't much bigger than a goose, is it such a bad thing.

But if we want a dinosaur association how about "T-Rex" or "Bronto". Although I always think of hawks and eagles etc when I someone says "raptor".
