Default Cougar Parts

Hi all from VIC,

Just bought a 99 Cougar & it turns out that it kinda needs a few bits & peices after getting a road worthy assesment this morning. Wondering if anyone can help. Does anyone know of any wreckers in VIC that have any cougars?

RRW - (Required for Road Worthy)

Parts I need:
1. rear parcel shelf plus the plastic part that holds the shelf - (the part were the latch is to pull down the back seats)
2. 2002 centre console because mine (99) shakes a fair bit plus it has cassette tape holders lol!?! and the cup holders... forget it. the only one I trust is between the two seats.
3. RRW: Headlights
4. RRW: x4 full brake components (discs, pads etc)
5. suspension - springs, struts should I get them new?
6. CD player, I think the cougar one is mdl 4600 or something
7. RRW: passanger door central locking mechanism.

Thanks in advance ppl.

Welcome to the forum Javus, I've sent you a PM regarding your other issue...

As for the above I know there are a number of online resources which some members would be able to list, I'd honestly even try ebay for some of your needs but make sure you get the right parts for what you want.

I'm not sure there'll be too many wrecked Cougars about for parts and I'm thinking the Ford option might be a bit costly...

Thanks for the welcome & reply.
I read a few 'bad purchase posts' on forums... I agree, FORD option is too costly but sometimes you have to go to them. e.g could not find the rubber covers for the brake and clutch pedals anywhere, had to order them from Ford. They also said that it's nearly an obsolete item. $21.50 for the brake & $16 for the clutch (in $AUD for those else where)

Has anyone got step-by-step instruction to open the interior door cover? I removed all the screws I see (behind the cougar logo on the handle etc...) but I could not get it off + didn't wont to damage, I F*K up like that before lol.

Cheers for the advice Dan

Welcome to the boards Javus.

Everything you could ever want to know about your Cougar is here

http://www.newcougar.org/

register and the information is endless.

If you are after parts then check here and look under Mercury - Cougar

http://www.rockauto.com/

I can highly recommend rockauto and I get ALL my parts from them including plugs & leads and they deliver to your door within 3-5 working days.

Good Luck and welcome.

.. be carefull of buying in headlights.. you need to look at the right hand drive headlights.. not US headlamps, check the dip angle.. if yours are tarnished/foggy.... clean them down with super fine wet & dry.. and polish them up.. The brake parts are available locally from DBA (Disc brake Australia) or cheaply enough from www.usafordsp.com .. the Shocks the same or from Kmac or Heasman Suspension in Sydney.
Supercheap will also get the shocks in if needed but you need to find somebody with a brain their..... price is ok.. Remember the car is partly European too.. the costs of USA freight is not cheap anymore, for lightweight stuff its ok. Most ebay cheap stuff is just that.. but no guarentee either past the feedback.. if you recieve it. Rock Auto is an exception.. good if in stock (they may ship from 3-4 places so it may not get to you at one time.. check.. & "if the parts are right", as stated but if not - especially heavy stuff like brake parts - check their return policy too. The shocks.. Bilsteens are GREAT but expenive.. also grab a copy of Parts Peddler or Parts Locator.. both have many Cougar parts sources, www.allford.com.au in Braeside helped out a while back too.. seemed ok on price.

I found this link on my wanderings around the net and would suggest they would be OK for the lights. All you would have to do is get them adjusted for RH drive (it is an easy job). Good for a lot of other parts as well and recommended by the guys at NECO.

Hey Thunderbird,

I think my car was involved in a very light front bingle which broke the headlight supports so I cant screw them in properly (loose)

** Thanks all for your replys & reccomendations. They have proven to be very very helpful.

e.g lower control arms for my cougar cost roughly $500 - $600 e.a from Ford. Got a quote from USAFORDSP.com for $179 e.a wtf FORD stop ripping us off.
https://pontiworld.com.au/usafordsp/...hp?cPath=21_36

http://www.ftgautosalvage.com.au/Default.asp these wreckers... awesome, found the part I needed for the parcel shelf plastic cover $25, FORD once again unbelievable price.

FumDuk I checked Rockauto for you and the all up price for a NEW compressor including delivery to Australia was U$331.35 = about A$500.00.(Look under Mercury/Cougar)

Mate, all you need is a credit card and you will have your compressor in a few days delivered to your door.

I have used Rockauto a number of times and can highly recommend them.

AC Compressors are absolutely DIFFERENT to the USA variety... as FumDuk also said and found out too the hard way.. and too much probably to post back now.. .. .. DO NOT ORDER FROM THE USA, from Rockauto or any US ford dealer.. ..
Maybe try sponsor FTGAutosalvage they said they had a good used one just a couple of weeks back.

Jarvis "Any recommendations for x4 rotors plus pads w/sensors for 99 cougar? for everyday spirited driving Also need a reliable, honest mechanic in Melbourne" - John Osborne at American Car Repairs at Elsternwick.. 9596 0362. .and older guy who has been in the industry for about 40 years.. .. he's not a reference center.. so be polite.. but honest and knows how things work.

definetly shop around Ford are very expensive $75 for a wheel nut that you can buy from outobarn for a bout 2.50 - 5.00
front brake pads fords $175
supacheap about $50
hope you dont have probs with the electrics either abs module $4000 to rebuild
and there are a number of other problems you need to keep an eye open for

Javus,

I've got the EBC Green Stuff pads on mine and they seem to work fine.
I've also had the rotors changed for Magnum Cross Drilled Rotors. I don't know if they're better or worse than slotted, but I liked the look more than anything else...

Hey FumDuk what was wrong with your A/C compressor? I have similar issue. The compresser on my car wont turn on, but its just because of blown diode. It costs $29 and can be ordered only by ford dealers from the factory.

There is no doubt that FRAUD parts are way over the odds when you can buy the same parts on line from overseas. As it happens shipping costs have come way down so order all the parts you want.

My preferred supplier is

http://www.rockauto.com/

If you want larger parts e.g. body panels I can arrange it for you.

Hi,

Sorry to bring up a few month old thread.

My sister's friend recently crashed her Cougar (front only) and no had no insurance, so she's asked me if I can strip it to recoup some cost.

EOI I guess, would there be much interest here for parts? It's red or maroon I think. eBay doesn't seem to have much on there for these cars, so the forums might be the way to go. Any Cougar specific forums in Oz or is this place my best bet?

Cheers.

It's never good to hear about a crashed Cougar, but at least the parts can live on!

There's no 'Australian' Cougar forum, so here's probably your best bet. The other main forum we peruse is over at newcougar.org, but all the Aussie users who view that one are also on here.

Thanks for your help, Abraxas

It's a 2000 model, auto. Has leather heated seats and is red.

What extras did these cars have? Don't see many around here. Car is going through some insurance stuff so I guess a few weeks before it'll be ready.

Anyone know what prices and what parts are most popular? Cheers again.
