Alrighty then I have a 1994 Ford laser. 1.8 Going to work one day. Car just stopped. Would not restart. Wife tried to restart 4 hours later and it fired and ran rough for 6 second or so then nothing. Would not fire 4 hours later next try. I will check for spark in the morning I will check for fuel pumping in the morning. My main questions are, Should I hear the fuel pump whir when the ignition is on or will I hear it when it cranks. Will I hear it at all?? Where is it located What kind of fuel pressure should I have. A little like a carburetor car or or a whole lot like a garden hose or even more. Can a blocked fuel filter do this? Dont think its a fried modulator. had one in a holden (Sorry forced purchase ignorance of youth etc) Not temperature related and not intermittent like the holden. The only thing I could say it did was surge a little over the past 2 weeks while cruising at 70km. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

My mate hade the same problem with his Laser, we found a loose relay in the fuse box near the battery was a yellow one from memory. I think it was the fuel pump relay.

Yes- you should be able to hear the fuel pump priming when the ignition is on & ready to crank (but only for a few seconds).
Yes - the system runs a much higher pressure than an older carby style set up. I doubt it's the fuel filter - as the car would start & run for at least 30 seconds before starving of fuel. Have a look on the fuel injection rail for a relief valve (Schraeder type like a tyre valve). Press in the valve & see if the fuel system is pressurised. |

Now I have that I should be able to start tonight. Just by chance do you know where the pump on the 1994 laser is. Tank or engine bay??? Thanks for your help. It is of great assistance. I dont feel anywhere neer as lost withi it. |

Did a few checks this arvo.
Got fuel on the engine side of the filter under moderate pressure. 2 or 3 cranks and it was shooting out but it felt like I could have stopped it coming out if I had wanted too. Is that normal to be able to stop it? Saw / felt fuel flowing but never heard the pump. Could not locate bleed nipple so cranked with hose uncoupled for 1 second to see fuel No blown fuses Relays clicking when engine turned to red lights on or "start position" Worst one. No spark at spark plug lead. No spark on end of coil lead. I think this is it. What to check next Thanks |

Ballast resistor? Also someone somewhere on the internet mentioned a spring type coil of wire that can go??? Not the main coil. Do ignition coils just stop. It gave no warning. It was so sudden I thought it was the timing belt. Any advice appreciated. thanks |

Changed the fuel filter which was not done for the 36 000km I have driven the car.
Not sure if it was change in the previous 206 000km. Started 10 sets of cranks later and ran nicely. The fuel that came out of the filter that was taken out was filled with what would be described as fairly fine black silt. The fuel was black too. I could still blow air through the filter with my mouth. Hope this info can be of some use to someone down the track. It was the fuel filter. The fuel filter wins!!!!!!!!! Also for those who end up here I never could here my fuel pump run to prime the system under any circumstances. |
