I have lla problem with our 92 Telstar Ghia. The 4cyl 2.2 motor was smoking real bad. I have replaced all valve stem seals and compression checks out fine. Still smokes on start up for first kilometre then is fine. Is there anyone who might suggest what to check next?

How many kms has it travelled ? What coloured smoke are you getting ? If it improves after running for a while I would be checking injectors and next step would be the fuel pump but unfortunately it's still very possible that the oil rings are gone even though you are showing good compression readings :(

Thanks for your advice. Blowing white smoke and 220k on the clock. Was thinking I should check the PCV valve. Does this draw straight from the top of the valves?

Try this quick procedure to check how the valve is operating
http://www.dummies.com/how-to/conten...pcv-valve.html If it's working OK you could try running a bottle of injector cleaner through it and see if that helps at all Looking at the easiest and cheapest options for you to try first, hopefully it will be something simple but a lot depends on how well it's been maintained over time. Have you changed the oil recently, if so are you using the correct grade in it ? |

Thanks Russ for advice so far. Checked out the PCV valve and all is fine there. Car has been in family since new and been serviced as per schedule for all of its life. Car is only kept as spare for kids and was lent to nephew while he was here from overseas for a couple of months. We think he has somehow run low on oil for a while although he is not admitting to it. Will try injector cleaner through the system. Car only does short runs of up to 20 km, should I give it a long run to burn off excess oil?

When you say burn off excess oil are you meaning it's overfilled ? If so, if it's overfilled considerably I would recommend draining some as this can also cause seals to blow :( If you try some injector cleaner in it, it wouldn't hurt to give it a good run, with the fact that it is not being driven a lot it may even be beneficial to chuck in an engine oil treatment something like Nulon or similar to help with lubrication. At least you know the history of the car so unless the nephew has really flogged it hopefully it should be OK
