Good morning
We will be performing our regular purge of inactive users later today. As we haven't performed this for awhile, it will take an extended period of time to remove the ~64,000 inactive users from the database during which the server performance will be considerably slower than normal. Inactive users are defined as those who have no activity in the last 90 days. The last time we ran this (Dec 2016) we removed 60k users many of whom have subsequently rejoined being only occasional visitors. In total, we have had over 350k registrations since we started and purged about 80% of those along the way and we will again be left with a core of ~75k users - about twice as many as were left after the last purge.

It will free up a lot of user names at least so those who were wanting changes should keep an eye out for what becomes available.

Active is simply defined as having 'activity' in the period. There are a lot of active users with zero post counts.
Citreonbender - the publicly visible member list does not include all member groups and user with post counts greater than a certain number aren't included in purges for thread continuity. Banned users are counted as inactive. I ran out of time last night so they will be purged tonight.

There must be quite a few who join, ask a question or two and don't return after getting their questions answered.

There are which is why we've purged about 167,000 member records - some of them multiple times.

The auto log-off only happens if you don't have cookies enabled as these maintain your login (if you have remember me ticked). The fact that you've been logged in is enough to reset the 'last visit' date which stops you from being purged.
