Was watching wheeler dealers the other day and they were doing up an E type Jag. The car Enzo Ferrari called the most beautiful car in the world.
jag by , on Flickr But i just don't get it. Sure it's not ugly, but most beautiful in the world? Not with that huge nose imo. Looks like a hot chick who would be a 10/10 if she didn't have such a big nose. So it got me thinking, which cars do you hear people talk about as being a beautiful car, but to you it just isn't? I'd also add the Citroen DS to my list. To me it just looks silly. ds by , on Flickr And yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder etc, etc, etc. |

There's only a few exceptions imo. The AU II and III XR's, FTE's and Ghia's with the full Tickford bodykit and wheels. The AU Forte and Futura were shockers. |

I just love how ugly they are and the comments you get for owning one. I get more thumbs up in my XR8 than I have in any other car i've ever owned. I think it's because they just stand out so much and are so recognisable and relatable to so many that remember them.

Overrated in looks? Subjective topic really.
Can't speak for the Jag, but the DS for it's time was way ahead of anything in terms of technology and design. Just look at other cars of 1955 and you can see why it still is talked about today.

Definitely in the eye of the beholder, I would have both of them in a heart beat.
You can make most cars look good/bad depending on the angle and colour; some have no hope. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/content/...g?imwidth=1400 https://www.classicandsportscar.com/...?itok=u5x7lN-V

But 200hp wheezer was never going to get him far. I can’t say I’ve seen the fuss of the E types styling. I’ve likened it to the late ‘90s Tauraus in that it looks like a piece of plastic that has melted in the sun. From the same era I think the C2 and early chrome bumper ‘68-72 C3 Corvettes are better lookers. Just forget the horrid yank plastic interiors. As for over rated. Any standard E30 3 Series BMW. I’ve owned a couple and I like them, but struggle to see the value these days. The lesser models have gained value on the back of the desirable & successful M3 and M325/325iS/325 Sport. The standard 325i goes good but most have open diff so that power spins one wheel when it’s most needed. The other engine spec 320i and 318i are asthmatic (to be fair, the 318 wasnt too bad for the 1980s and has gained a bad rep living in the shadow of the 2.5). E30 (and E34) suspension is an archaic set up compared to Mercedes W201 and W124 of the same era. Also from the same era the build quality of Mercedes from the 1980s w126, 124 and 201 is a bit over rated or exaggerated. Yeah they are solid quality cars and probably the best of the era but interior plastics, vinyls and dash board are a bit mediocre considering the reputation they’ve gained. W126 susceptible to rust. Following models W140 S Class, R129 roadster and W210 E Class are built like brick ****houses in comparison. Better interior build, materials and good rust proofing. Have wrecked a few for parts, the 140 are a mission to pull apart, way over engineered. Too bad plastic cooling system components and enviro friendly wiring harnesses let them down. 70 series land cruiser. Before taking into account the offensive price and engine specs mirroring a 25 year old AU Falcon taxi. Anyone who’s had the misfortune to drive & live with one will know. If not they’re in denial. |

Fair call. They are tough and will handle a lot of punishment. But they would be an absolute pig of a thing to drive. Like a truck from the 70's.

Does show though, get it right, market it right and price doesn't have to be the deciding factor.

I was going to put eGas Falcon on the list but you probably can't say its 'overrated' because everyone knows mixer ring LPG setups are the devil |

You will find most of the early FPV/Barra parts have tickford logos. Imagine if the barra was around during AU, or that the 5.6L happened during T1/2.

Within the Falcons the Tickfords are probably the best balanced drivers' cars.
If anything, underrated.

I'm trying to think of 'overrated' - a tough one as so subjective with looks etc. And not just saying a car is overrated as you don't like it, for eg with dual cabs I'm no fan of them, but plenty are, they are a good compromise between work/family/load/offroad so they probably sell for a reason.
Going back, only thing that immediately pops up is VT Commodore vs the poor AU. On sales, perception, looks, VT conquered. On the substance behind it, AU had the engineering quality while things like the Commodore IRS needed the VXII upgrades from the start. But VT was marketed so well (interior choices, ride choice, pitched with a bit of special for everyday people user-choosing their work car etc) and AU so... ordinarily... that in respect of how they were built, the VT was overrated. Edit: a modern example, the Hilux/Prado 2.8DPF that could lay a smokescreen like a WW2 destroyer. Hasn't seem to affected the resale, or the reliability perception.

We don't need to go there again. Wouldn't say no to a nice L67 myself. Actually speaking of overrated, how's the introduction of the Alloytec and all the subsequent timing chains and sludging - makes the Ecotec be remembered so fondly, even today. Lol when the Holden service department tell your Dad his VY ecotec was the best model ever, hold on to it - years after it was in production!
