Young guy came into work showing off his brand new Casio G Shock that he had just bought for $500, me being a bit older, was amazed.
I never realised that these watches are now a 'presige' watch that command that sort of money, a quick check on the net revaled some selling for over $2000 I remember buying these at the markets in Sydney, like Fairfield markets or Paddy's Markets for $6-15, I have not been to markets for probably a decade or more, so not sure if this is still the case. I think now I want one

I've got one, but it was bought off Catch of the Day for less than $200.
In the stores I've seen them for between $250-300, but never more than that. Mines scratched and covered in paint so I might get myself a new one soon, but it must still be an analogue watch face for mine, no full digital here.....

There are plenty advertised for way over $200-300, not sure why but they are.
Here are a few: To me this looks like a $15-20 watch I would buy my kids: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Casio-G-S...wAAOSw7FRWVtE1 Nice watch, but the price http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Presale-C...UAAOSwbdpWXrU5 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CASIO-G-S...kAAOSw5ZBWPxmY

The G shock watches have come a long way with plenty of awesome tech.
I have the latest range man triple sensor. Cost @250.00 -300. There are new models with awesome metal tech and triple sensor and GPS tech that go above $800-1000. They are an awesome heavy duty , hard wearing and accurate timepiece. I luv em. Have 3 in my collection so far. I'm a bit if a watch nerd.

I bought a Baby-G in Hawaii in 2011 for $70us (back when the Aussie dollar was above parity), the same watch here, $170.
A friend bought one last year for $190, decided she didn't like it and gave it to me (refused my offers to buy it from her, as she'd only worn it twice). They are great for work, but every time I have to change the DST settings I need to Google the instructions, because it's so complicated. Briefly considered taking one on my trip to Finland this year, but I wasn't confident in being able to change settings, so I bought a cheap dollar store watch instead - which I smashed to pieces in Norway.

Casio make great watches which are generally tough. I've had two in the recent past but was dissapointed when I wanted to get a simple battery replacement and it came back with a blacked out LCD screen.
That wouldn't be a problem but it seems they do not carry parts for long. So basically I was in a position when they farked my watch and did not want to pay for a replacement. But having said that such is my luck I bought an Armani watch and still got a dud |

I was in the watch industry for over 20 years and I can tell you most of the retail prices are just plain daylight robbery. The most expensive part of a quartz watch is the case and 90% of cases are made in China these days. The modules inside cost around USD$5 and are mostly made by the Japanese Citizen or Seiko companies or Swiss ETA in their Chinese factories. Really cheap watches use Chinese modules of questionably quality. The Chinese can make a man's metal analogue watch on a metal bracelet for USD$2. I can buy a Chinese copy of an Apple watch for USD$40. It doesn't have all the features but is GPS and blue tooth compatible, The only genuine beautiful pieces available today are Swiss analogue watches made by horological masters like Patek Phillipe, IWC and such.
Tag Heuer are just a straight out rip off. |

Lets keep it realistic not many of us a dropping $25-$50K on a dam watch. If you work in the car industry you can say BMWs are a rip off, the only decent cars these days are Rolls Royce, Bentleys and Bugattis. |

I must have missed the point to. Pedro seems to imply that Tag are a rip off because of Asian parts not 100% Swiss. Out of the 20 or so companies that supply Tag only one is not Swiss, Seiko and these parts have been re designed and improved before fitting. It would be same as saying BMW, Mercedes etc aren't decent German cars because some components are made in different countries, including Chinese bearings in the BMW's.

So according to what he is saying a TAG watch would be made for around $50-100 and sold at ridiculous mark up to the suckers (consumers). Happy to be corrected if I missed the point. Quote:

I have been to the watch markets in Southern China and picked up great watches for $10 etc that are still working today. I can definitely see the difference in workmanship and can see why they are only worth that much. I wouldn't swap a classic designed Tag for a few hundred Chinese models. |

I've got 2 G-Shock watches (one white and one black) and use them for casual/weekend stuff. Also got a TW Steel for more casual scenarios. For work with a suit I wear a 10yr old Tag Heuer Aquaracer as well as a Hugo Boss I got off Catch of the Day.
I want a Panerai for my next watch. Will probably get a 2nd hand one in the next year or so.

I had one bought for me, I use it as daily or if I'm likely to smash it about. But I prefer my Tag Calibre S SLR, or my Longines.

Not a fan of G shock my daughters have one each and love them. Kate has to wear a watch as where she works you can't have a mobile phone for security reasons. I prefer my Tag Aquaracer and for special occasions my Submariner but everyone knows if you want the time you look at your phone so the watch is just a fashion accessory or statement of sorts in most cases.

Looks like TAGs are a popular choice......they are pretty dam tough and reliable, not too flashy but look nice on most occasions. My Link looks pretty dated now but being 15 years old and worn endlessly without many f...ks given it has not let me down and the face is as perfect as the day I got it.

Judging from the posts here, seems I know what I'll be getting the missus this Christmas! Speaking of other watches, what do you guys think of the Orient watches?
