Default just changed to MSD coil packs now its running rough

hey i just put my MSD coil packs on, now the car is running rough when you back off it backfires, and feels like it is running on 7 cylinders.

i have checked all the leads, and they are round the correct way and are on properly. i havnt changed over to the MSD leads yet will do that tomorrow.

do i have to reset the computer once the coil packs are installed? i have the battery disconnected at the moment.

I didn't have to when I installed mine - you sure you put the leads on correctly?

Maybe one isn't clipped on the tower properly?

yeah the car seemed fine when i first started it up, then i took of the lead on NO.5 but seen i would run out of light to change them over.

so i put the top gun lead back on. took it for a drive and now im getting these problems. i re checked the lead and it has popped on to the spark plug and feels like it is on. the car seems fine on idle though.

alls good its all fixed had to put the MSD lead for cylinder No.5 on, the top gun lead had been sitting on the exhaust and has cracked all the way through.

i got my dad out and he noticed that the spark plug is loose, we tried to fit the spark plug socket on and it wont fit as it fouls on the header. so what do you guys use to tighten up the spark plugs?

no wonder why my car was running rough and i definately have found a workshop that i will not be returning to. one that claims they have 30+ years in working on fords.

No. 5 is a cow, wouldn't be the first time an AU V8 owner has left a workshop with the plug finger tight.

What headers are you running, some (like mine) can make using a ring spanner impossible.

I thought it was going to be a dodgy lead.

Use a ring spanner for number five plug too.

A wobble type extension with the spark plug socket does fit on the no.5 plug aswell for anyone interested. . Did mine the other week. Old one was finger tight too.

yeah fantastic mod,

low down revs were rough before, and i didnt think it was that bad but since changing the coil packs it has smoothed out alot.
very smooth revs throughout the whole range now, and the response has been greatly improved.

if anyone was thinking about buying these for your AU dont hesitate they are are great mod. ill put up some pics a lil later.

ok just got some pictures (actually just finished the job lol, worked till 6am so was asleep till 2-3pm this arvo and had other stuff to do today)

here is picture of the completed job

tomorrow morning just need to add some zip ties and put back those plastic clips to keep the leads off the headers.

lol i didnt get what you guys meant bout using the ring spanner at first then i figured it out haha. (i thought you meant to just use the ring spanner by itself )
the ring spanner didnt actually clear the standard header but the open end did.

for those that are abit slow like myself you need a 3/4 ring/open end spanner, and the 5/8th spark plug socket.

and then put them together like this

and here is the cause of the problem which started this thread

Man, you are nearly as bad as Russell with the lead placement!

Use the factory lead tidy's to make them look nice and neat...

lol if i wanted a pretty engine bay i wouldnt of got one with a windsor in it haha.

what are everyone else's leads like? mine are extremely tight and a slight nudge one side will pop off. i didnt like the idea of that so i cable tied around the two clips on each lead.

one of the clips on the side of the plug that goes into the side of the coil pack was very brittle aswell and got a sligt crack in it. another cable ties to make sure its not going anywhere.

i quite like the placement of the leads, from above they look neat enough to me.

Yeah just having a go that's all.

Mine were quite tight to clip onto the tower, but once they were on, they didn't feel like they were going anywhere.

Hi guys, i just wanted to know where the best place is to get the msd coils and leads for an au2 xr8. I'm up in Qld and we kinda suck when it comes to aftermarket products, they are either never in stock or the prices are ridiculous

Good to see another misfire has been solved.

I'm a little concerned about the need for the cable ties to lock the coil clips on, they 'should' go on without needing them... Sometimes the rubber boot at the coil end binds up a bit and prevents the terminal clicking into place, check it out and make sure everything is in its proper place.

pjm58 & Trace, I do have some more coil packs in stock now (bought all of the latest shipment) I'll PM some pricing.

-Dave.

Got my plugs, MSD leads and MSD coilpacks from Dave too and the TE is running very smooth now.

As long as you make sure the rubber boot slips on nicely they click into place fine. I went with the factory lead placement and lead tidy's with mine too.

I just replaced the pair of coil packs on my AU 1 XR8, after problems with hard starting and initial running like on 4 cylinders.

Got them from www.rockauto.com they were Standard Motor Products, made in the USA, part number FD 487, landed at the front door by FedEx for a total of Aus$178.

Car seems to be running fine now, nice and smooth.
