Hello AFF!
I'm running a competition for AFF as I would like to draw on the talent we have available here, who can design the best logo(s), as I'm starting a small automotive business which the roller doors should be open on the 1st of July. Like every competition there will be a reward, which will be $500 for the best design that I like and decide on. With the logo, there are a few requirements, we may need a few different types of the one logo, as it will be embroidered onto uniforms/hats (might need something embroidery friendly for this?) and printed onto T-shirts as well as used on business cards and metal signs. Competition starts as of today and ends on 20/05/2015 Requirements of logo(s):
Business Name: R&D Auto Electrics What we do: Automotive Air Conditioning Starter motors Alternators Dual Battery Setup New Batteries Accessory Fitment Full Rewire on Classics Address: 12B Newry Drive, New Gisborne, 3438 Phone Number: 5428 XXXX (Just use this as a place holder so you can do the logo, we can edit it later with the real deal) Theres $500 up for grabs so any of you handy on photoshop if you have some spare time and enjoy this sort of thing, why not have a crack? Thanks guys I really appreciate it. |

Two people in the running, if you don't have photoshop there is a free image program called GIMP:
http://www.gimp.org/ Unfortunately pen on paper is no good for me as it has to be digital so I can send it out to business to do me up signs, embroidery etc. |

So, so far we know of two people who are in the running, do we have anyone else who would like to announce they're in the running because at the moment that $500 is going to one of two people.

Hey Damo,
I can't draw to save my life but congrats on the new business. I am starting to build a new house just around the corner (currently Woodend). I need some electrical and air con work done on the Mustang so I will come see you when you are open. Cheers, Andrew |

Hi Damo
Forget about photoshop and the like. If you are going to profesionally use this design, and that's what appears to be the case here, then you need this designed in Corel or Illustrator. If you use photoshop or images off the web then they will virtually be jpgs and pixellated making them less than useless for screen printing or embroidering.

Thanks for the advice Snowcone, even with them being done in PSD format in high resolution for example in Photoshop?

For embroidery it will have to be digitised by the embroiderer and for the T shirts a print screen will have to be made by the printer for every colour. with embroidery colour is not an issue and you can have as many as you like as the costs are calculated on the number of stitches in the artwork ( atypical logo will be around 8,000 stitches on a cap) Screen printing is different again as each colour needs to have it's own screen so keep the colours to a minimum eg no fancy designs with 6 different colours. Also White or light coloured T shirts are cheaper to print. If you use dark T shirts you will have to allow for an additional white base print underneath the artwork If you want to go all out and crazy with multiple colours and images you will find some printers can now produce what is called DTG full colour printing (direct to garment and not like the old plastic print) but you will pay a premium for this.

Hey Craig, thanks for entering and showing a design.
That looks pretty cool, nice and simple, that might even be the go for printing/embroidery on a baseball cap? Remember phone number place holder and address as well, for a T-shirt or a sign, what we do underneath, checklist(checkboxes with ticks even?)/dot points etc? T-shirts and most of the uniform is going to be black. If anyone has some prototypes they want to throw up for feedback or check out some of the competition and what they are doing, chuck them up here. I've seen two so far. PSD can be enlarged without distortion. I think PNG also works.

i'll add that a friend has his own screenprint business, anything I have sent to him is in PDF, which he then converts. So really, it does it matter what programme you use if thats the case?

Quick attempt before bed. Wasn't sure if you had colours in mind, so just had a crack.

Thanks XY GS, that looks pretty cool too, if anyone is keen to see what our uniform is most likely going to be based on, this is the shirt we are looking at:
http://www.treloarapparel.com.au/designatec.pdf 5th page down, the green/black with the high visibility stripe. Hat wise, probably just a black flexfit baseball cap. T-shirt wise, just a plain black t-shirt. Last edited by Franco Cozzo; 05-05-2015 at 11:57 PM. |

Sorry to keep raining on your parade.
If the shirts are going to have embroidery on the pocket as shown in the above design, then you will have to source shirts with loose pockets (this means the pocket is supplied as a square piece of fabric and not sewn on). The embroiderer then embroiders the piece of material and then you send it back to the shirt company to have the pocket sewn on. There are very few embroiderers that will have a hoop small enough to fit inside a sewn on pocket and if they do have one then the embroidery would have to be very small. This is why you see the embroidery above the pocket on most shirts and also the reason that promotional shirts don't have pockets. The artwork can be supplied as a hi res pdf but it needs to be created in a graphics program such as Corel or Illustrator. A poor quality design can be recreated in necessary - we use an offshore service for this (India) as the time costs too much in Aus.

Could move the logo up above the pocket, in the green section if that makes life easier for everyone
Thanks Snowcone this is handy information. Last edited by Franco Cozzo; 06-05-2015 at 10:14 AM. |

XY GS if possible could we get this logo with the address under the phone number too:
Also I probably should have put this in for the number first, but (03) our area code before the number Maybe even make it longer, so it fits across the green section above the pockets nicely? |

Damo, you don't need your phone number on your shirts.
If your company name is on there that is enough to identify you. If someone is reading your shirt then they are already in front of you and can talk to you one on one, or you give them your business card and they have the number on that. In any case, embroidery any smaller than 4mm is not legible and just looks like a blob of cotton. PS - do not design anything with shading in it for your clothing - business cards and flyers are OK but not the others because - 1/ embroidery cannot reproduce shading as cotton is only one colour using either Marathon or Isalon Pantone colours and can't fade from light blue to sky blue etc 2/ screen printing cannot reproduce shading as each colour has to be printed as a solid PMS colour. 3/ digital colour printing is the only way you can have shading but it costs a lot more.

We usually do stuff after the shop closes so we might be out in pubs, local restaurants or at other social events around the place in our uniforms. |

Sorry Big Damo, didn't even see the part about embroidery late last night. I just assumed direct to garment printing so had a bit of a muck around with some ideas.
Also, a phone number on the back of your shirts is definitely a good idea. Always got questions about our business/what we could do when I was out doing a job or at the pub with my work shirt on. |
