A very good writeup. Really need to emphasise the point that if you dont have the right torx bit, dont bother trying! :

I changed one for ragtop the other day with no torx bit - just my $1 modified screwdriver bit. Works well, but you really do have to be careful when undoing the bolts initially - they are very tight, and either the screwdriver bit breaks, or the bolt comes undone.

I've done around 8 wheels now, and not one 5 sided No 30 torx bit in sight - I do have a full set of the 6 sided ones though.

Very good write up GK, just wish i had this when i changed mine.

I didnt quite know the sizes of each bit, so had to modify and play around with a bunch of different tools. It worked but i cant imagine how much easier it would be to have all the bits listed and just follow your instruction :1syellow1 .

Good work mate, will help many people in the future.

Another job well done George.
Have you put in your application to Haynes or Gregories to do thier next Ford manual!!!
Just one thing, when removing the wheel to save it hitting you in the face it would be best to leave the torx screw in a few turns until the wheel is loose.

Ford here in Brisbane charged me $40 to change mine once. Rip-off. But if you don't have the tools, probably a good option.

Yep, very nice wheel, thanks for sending it my way!

It's heaps nicer to drive with over the standard wheel.

Good stuff, I'm planning to do this soon. The tips I picked up from your other post about changing rotors came in handy too. I changed my pads and rotors today.

I tried to change my steering wheel on the weekend. I ended up bending my original grey one as I pulled so hard and it wouldn't budge. Need to go to Ford.

A few of us have bought the kit from here - $50 inc express postage. I had mine 24 hours after payment.

http://stores.ebay.com.au/Borrys-Online-Bargains

With the right tools it takes about 15 minutes from go to whoa...

You'll also need a 50T or 55T (I'll check which one tomorrow) six point torx for the bolt that holds the steering wheel on to the shaft. Most of the auto places should have those. I got a set of six pointers from Repco 6 months ago for around $25. (The six pointers are also on the ebay store above).

Well, I checked and it's a 50T.

Of course I could have just rechecked the "How to" and I would have seen this:-

"7. Undo centre torx bolt, 6 sided this time - size T50."

Doh!...

GK- well done with all of your write ups, why don't you talk to Casper and get these put on the website(aufalcon.com) for easy access?

Maybe it will inspire him to update aufalcon.com, haha

Russ has actually copied them to the "technical section" which I consider quite an honour, considering what he's done there.

Guys, it might be worth mentioning that I just popped my wheel off in 5 minutes flat without any torx tools. I'm working on an EF but it looks the same. I used a 10mm socket to pull the airbag out. Then carefully selected a snug fitting flat blade screwdriver to undo the torx bolt holding the wheel on. Its a high tensile bolt and if its not too tight then this does the trick without damaging anything.

See pic here,
http://www.fordforums.com.au/showpos...&postcount=239

But thanks again for the tips GK, made the job very easy. I can't beleive what ford charge for this!

EF/EL only had normal bolts with 10mm heads - AUs got the special 5 sided torx bit, so the right tool, or a modified tool or bolt is required.

I was thinking about spark plugs, but they are ok on both cars.

Also, people do quite different thoings, some use a torque wrench, some don't, some put a lube or anti-seize compond on, some don't.

In any case, it'd still be worth doing. I guess I could include a bit on how to check the gap etc!

Cheers, and thanks for your kind comments. I really enjoy doing the "how to's" and it's good to know that others find them of use!
