So I am creeping up on 400K in my MC highway hack, so coming up to timing belt time again.
As I have a few other niggling issues, not the least a bad rear main oil leak, I am considering dropping the engine and box completely out of the car, and doing all the little jobs in the open. Has anyone had any experience with this? The rough plan is to lift the car on a hoist, disconnect everything and then lower it on to a trolley, and unbolt the entire K frame complete. Any advice or suggestions welcome.

TBH I don't think this would be a vehicle someone should do for a first attempt at dong one with no experience. It's quite involved, and that's only me looking at it from underneath.
My go to would be an Engine Support Bar from above and like you said remove the K-frame to lower it onto a trolley. Jeez that'll be a lot of work looking at it. Here's a vid on a manual trans alone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TU8mvOwxVZI

So the decision has been made for me. 390K km, and I've developed an expensive sounding noise from I suspect the transmission. I have replaced the wheel bearings out of hope, but that didn't solve the issue.
I took a punt and brought a wrecked MC hatch from the auctions last week, and plan on swapping both engine and box over, as the wreck has half the kilometres on it. The wreck seems to drive ok, smooth shifts and quiet box. Fingers crossed I'll get another couple of years out of the old girl

Well congrats, and great project to do. I'd replace everything you were going to do on the old engine to the replacement engine, upper gaskets, intake ports clean, timing belt+WP, remove the sump and reseal it, clean all intake ducting, replace all hose sections and clamps, clean (perhaps upgrade) the intercooler, suspension & bushes refresh, try replacing the ODO cluster.
Around 420K kms the injectors would be near renewing or at least not far off telling you they need freshening up. You'll end up ahead, given everything goes to plan, cost and performance wise. A complete going over, she's worth it. Good on ya nevertheless.

Hi Bundybear. Looks like you have fallen in love. Maybe someone will give you a shake and you will will see the beloved for what she really is ?
The 2 litre diesel has saved me a lot of money, also nice to drive, but for hitting a kangaroo. The technology has become ever complicated though, and I wonder if it might be time to let go and get something less personal? Having said that I love my MC more than any car I've had. The EF falcon did 50000km but felt more like boat. |

Reality is, second hand cars a stupid expensive at the moment, and I dont want to put $20K into another ex fleet wagon. I looked at a 2012 low km wagon at Pickles Dubbo a couple of weeks ago, pretty rough (stove in tailgate), but it went for $9500 - I paid 13 for the same 6 years ago

They really are cheap to run on long trips considering the size of the vehicle. I usually average better than 6 l/100 km on NZ roads, and that's without any attempt at economy driving!
