Default Anyone into 3D printing ?

Hey it's been a while since I've been on here.

I sold the Falcons and bought an Audi now own an FGII xr6 ute.

I've had my 3D printer for about 6 months. I made little pieces like screw caps, grab handles, badges, etc

I'm just interested if others have printed, 3d scanned or even drawn car parts.

I have a 3d printed electric turbo (plans anyways), yes you read right. The Audi RS5 concept uses it, I have access to 48v dc motors, 12-48v step ups and all the necessary equipment so why not. I would even sand cast the plastic and make an alloy version.

I'll upload pics once I get on my pc

3D printing blows my mind away, doctors in Melbourne 3D printed an ankle bone in Titanium and saved a patients leg from cancer.
Still can't believe you can 3D print a gun! Obviously you need some extra parts to make it work but it really wouldn't be hard to get them sent to you. It's crazy!
Scientists aren't far off growing body parts in the lab, so rather than needing a donor they can make the part in the lab and its from your DNA so it won't be rejected by your body.

Even more embarrasing would be the lower spec variants of the VF in HSV's stable getting whopped by a factory XR8.

No, only seen them on the box, looks very cool technology though.
sort of reminds me of what was that movie with bruce willis and Milla hoho in it, where they get a strand of dna and make milla out of it ?........ wish i could get one of those ; ).

My brother has 4, trying to start a business. I've used them for odd jobs, just CAD up something I need and get him to print it off. Fantastic for little car bits which would otherwise cost a fortune. I was surprised how strong it is, printed a mount at 20% density and it could support 100kg +

And that's just the plastic ones. I'd love one of the metal ones, saw koenigsegg is printing their new turbochargers with the internals all printed inside, pretty awesome.

Yeah I've printed some brackets with PLA (biodegradable plastic) and it's been strong enough.

I need to set up the Xbox kinect sensor and start 3d scanning bigger things

$1000

The velleman k8200.

200mm x 200mm x 200mm

0.2mm resolution
0.5mm print head

It's one of the only ones that allow control of temperature for different plastics.

190 degrees for black PLA
194 degrees for red PLA
230 degrees for black ABS etc

And the print bed goes from 0 to 135 degrees.

It's a good printer but in kit form isn't worth $1300 retail considering the mods required to print at a satisfactory finish especially if you have no technical knowledge.

Otherwise it's alright a bit of tweaking and mods and it's now printing almost spot on

I went to the red bull racing f1 factory a couple of weeks back and saw their titanium metal printer. Wow. This thing is brilliant. It puts down a fine layer of powder and then uses s laser to fuse (weld) the power to the layer below. They showed us some printed brembo brakes which was only a test piece

3D Printing now is where Dot Maxtrix Printers were when compared to colour Printers now.
Exciting times ahead.
How far are we off scanning a Body Shell of a Classic Car and reproducing a perfect rust free copy on a 3d Printer?

technically we are already there.

there are commercial scanners that can scan a car sized object, but you will need to 'clean' up the file before printing and that's the catch, bigger the object, the more cleaning required.

ill be scanning some ford parts to print in ABS. bring back the tickford snorkel? maybe even non marring spanners...

I don't have one of these, but how hard is it to get all the design right in a CAD system?

Are we talking hours of complex work?

It wouldn't take much to download a file from the internet and print something.
The time required to learn to use a CAD program successfully would be what stops the average punter in their tracks.

honestly the best way is to scan the original and modify from there

these printers and even better versions have tolerances of 2micron or less.

3D printed firearms, interesting.

This guy created the "Liberator" and released it for free for people with 3D Printers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5fhBBipU3w

I wonder if this will turn into a legal issue?

come on now, that kind of thinking is why this technology took so long to take off.

to print that gun for use you need

3d printer $1000-$10000

ABS plastic - $45 per 1kg roll
take 230degrees to melt
bed temp needs to be 70-100degrees to properly stick (running the same power of an aircon/oven/stove)
you'll need between 15-40 hours of your life waiting for it
metal firing pin

you still need access to the bullets

then a clear mindset that you're going to use it.

you've already made clear that you're a fruitcake if you even kill someone with it, given the effort. I don't think the 3d printer made it easier, you made your mind up long before you hit print, which you could have just used your Australian built falcon and drive over someone instead.... those dangerous falcons

if you're a terrorist. you can sneak plastic through a detector, given that they don't xray your body or carry on. you've still got a metal bullet inside.
you've spent well beyond your needs for a one time use weapon
unless you're planning an attack in 2152 because you'll be waiting for parts to print its kind of silly.

on the subject of the liberator

its available on most pirating sites
that site has been taken down by the US
there is about 5 versions available now
you can print your own nerf gun

there's 5 guns to over 100,000 harmless (some useless) creations.

if anything the only problem 3d printers will cause is copyright infringements

Regardless of how expensive it is and the process involved, and the kind of person it takes to do the wrong thing, it is still going to be a legal concern when this technology goes mainstream, like everything really.

The media is going to play up the making firearms aspect to get people scared, they never push the positive angle that now we can make things to fix stuff which is obsolete etc.

When the media pushes the fear and creates the storm, thats when the politicians jump on board to appease the people and political point scoring begins, classic example hoon laws and how truck drivers are percieved by Joe Average.

All it takes is those 5 designs and those are the ones which get the negative media storm happening, not the 100,000 others.

One of the offices I worked for in the UK bought an early commercial grade 3D printer for near 100K pounds...while the GFC was hitting. We made 40 people redundant a week or two later and the office discovered the cost to use the machine was exorbitant so in the two following years only 1 project could afford to make a 3D model.
Of course when it came to the crunch the team discovered half the young guys in the office had used all the materials to make crap for home, without permission, and they couldn't complete their model. We then paid 15K to have it made out of house.
I cant believe how cheap home versions are now, its a fast moving tech.

Two things.
Firstly, on the 3D printing side of things, yes its extraordinary, however like a lot of things it comes down to budget. There are some cheaper units out there, but realistically they are novelty value only, as the end result is very rough.
Keep in mind that the greatest benefit of this technology is prototyping. The ability to transform a computer design into a working model without any intermediate steps.
For metal though, I suppose some very intricate "pre-assembled" designs are possible but for the most part I feel CNC is superior.

Now onto the plastic guns nonsense.
Any idiot can make a gun. (How well and reliably it works is a different matter.)
The difficult thing (in Australia) remains sourcing the ammunition.
NO plastic breach could contain a modern high pressure cartridge. At best you might get off one very dodgy shot, at worst the thing will literally blow up in your face. You can get a better result with a toy gun and some piping.
And here's the big thing: Criminals have access to guns. If you're a crim and need a gun you can simply buy one, or better yet steal it.

The big danger, when these printers become more common, is that some kid will get hold of some ammo from their dad, "print" themselves off a "gun" and blow their fingers off.

The one that the above company has completed was able to fire 600 rounds in a row from an AR15, so thats a pretty good effort I think.

Don't believe everything you see on youtube.

My point is that anybody that wants to make a dodgy gun can do so, so why bother investing in a $10,000 printer to do so?
Furthermore, if you have access to a machine shop with decent CNC, you can make a gun that with the proper treatment will be as good as the professionals.
Or, you could just go BUY a gun.
The biggest joke is that these plastic gun stories are coming out of the USA. Yeah, like plastic guns are anything to worry about.
The biggest danger there is that some stupid kid will print one off, his neighbour will see him and blow his head off in "self defence."

It's only the trigger mechanism that plastic.
The rest of the gun is steel.

Just 3d print a cartridge and fill it with fireworks gunpowder

Regardless of the technology used, idiots will do stupid things, you can only hope the only ones injured is themselves.

simply take a photo with your phone. (B/W) sepia
and it auto generate G code or M code (from a drop down menu)for that specific machine..

I can see this technology helping countries like ours a lot...
We use to be strong in manufacturing, then everything went offshore to lower cost countries. Not now, but there will be a point where the printer (and print material) will be lower than someone overseas producing the same product. At least, I hope so!

NASA have successfully launched prototype rockets using 3D parts. Also on the International Space Station they have started to make bits n pieces. They`ll ship them back to compare quality etc. Its a must for any deep-space missions to be able to make replacement parts as needed.
