Default Digital Driver Licence statewide rollout

Digital Driver Licence statewide rollout

Following successful trial programs in Dubbo and Sydney's Eastern Beaches, Service NSW will make the Digital Driver Licence available to all NSW drivers in 2019.

This exciting new initiative will give drivers the option to securely store and use their Digital Driver Licence on their smartphone using the Service NSW App. Drivers can use the Digital Driver Licence to demonstrate that they hold a valid driver licence, to prove their identity, or as proof of age.

In anticipation of the Digital Driver Licence becoming available to all NSW drivers, Service NSW has prepared an information pack for individuals that includes the following:

We will continue to provide you with up-to-date information regarding the Digital Driver Licence as we roll out the program. Further information can be found at www.service.nsw.gov.au/digital-driver-licence

If you require further support or have questions regarding the Digital Driver Licence please do not hesitate to contact the team at digital.licences@services.nsw.gov.au

Weird, I thought phones could charge in your car. More like “Here’s my license officer...oh you’re going to give me a ticket for using my phone too?”

As far as I know police can look up your license on their mobile data terminal anyway?

And if was just stored on one's mobile I'm sure someone could just make a license on Microsoft Paint to store on their phone?

What if the phone said my license was current and the data terminal in the police car said it was cancelled?

It maybe possible.

I am not sure what the system is in other states but in Victoria the Police and Vic Roads have their own databases. I was booked by a Police Officer for low range speeding, paid the fine and I checked my driving history a couple of years later and the demerit point never made it onto the Vic Roads Database.

So now they take you in and hold you until your identity is verified but I bet your phone is confiscated until that happens.
Or as someone else said, charge you for using your phone while in drivers seat

Eventually I'm sure, you either won't be able to opt out, or they'll charge you extra for the luxury of having a card.

Not everyone has a smart phone either.

If you own a Smartphone, they already do! Privacy is a thing of the past.

And the recent trend with unlocking your phone by way of face recognition, and/or finger print recognition.... well..., let's just say that you agreed to share that data when you first turned on your brand new Smartphone and pressed the 'Agree' button. No warrant needed.

You’d think an office manager would have a grasp of such concepts.

Maybe he’s the office manager of Dunder Mifflin and feels safer with everything on paper.

This is amazing, you can now show your license, pay your fine and book an uber from the convenience of 1 device when they disqualify you from driving.

We've had electronic licenses in SA for a while now. I have my license, Taxi accreditation and all the vehicles connected with my name, all on the mySAgov App. When you have to flash your license there is a unique barcode/Qcode that comes up on the bottom of the screen. It shows the current time and date etc. so the cops can see it's not just a photo or screen capture once they scan the code.

thanks for the information some cant grasp the concept how it would works.

if someone has your wallet, all they do is open it.

If someone has you phone, they still need to know the pin numbers or fingerprints.

Also you can track and wipe the smartphone remotely.

Police already have car licence plate recognition and facial and biometric recognition is the next step which our airport already have.

Actually they want to eliminate passports for travel in Aust.

Have all the states and territories agreed to digital licenses the standards and interoperability?

When we introduced the SmartCard license in Qld - interoperability and standards were a big issue. I was issued with one of the very first Qld SmartCard licenses (pre-public availability) and not long after the coppers in Grafton stopped me for an RBT, they had never before seen the new Qld license.

Luckily they accepted the new license but it could have gone really bad - I remember quite clearly their discussion "Hey Roscoe have you ever seen one of these before?"

I had a similar experience when here in SA they phased out the need to have rego stickers displayed on the car. That came in to effect on the 1st July, car rego renewed in August so removed the sticker on the car then.
I then drove over to Bathurst in October and when we were entering the campground, the police as usual pulled us up for the usual check. The NSW police office walked around the car and came back to my window and asked me where my rego was. I had to politely explain that as of July, the stickers weren't a requirement in SA anymore.

I doubt there are any communications between states regarding these things.

That's alright then. I'm not handing my phone to the police so they can check my details.

I like new technology, but for some things I just don't see the point. Give me a plastic licence any day.

They announced it will be available in NSW from August.

So with mobile pay and digital licence, you dont need to carry a wallet now.

https://au.news.yahoo.com/nsw-digita...043825996.html

The state that's rolling out digital driver's licences

Yahoo News Australia Yahoo News Australia15 June 2019

NSW drivers will soon be able to ditch the plastic when digital licences will be rolled out across the state.

The announcement comes after a successful trial was carried out in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, Albury and Dubbo areas earlier this year.

Any licensed NSW driver with a smartphone will be able to produce their phone to show their proof of license from August this year.

It won’t cost drivers a cent to switch to the digital version, but drivers travelling outside of NSW will still need to carry their plastic card.

The NSW digital version is currently not valid in other states or overseas.

NSW will also have other digital versions available including Boat Driving Licence, Vessel Registration, Recreational Fishing Fee, Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Competency Card. Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) Competency Card and Working With Children Check (WWCC) clearance.

More
Drivers who are not as confident with smartphone technology will still be able to use the plastic card licence.

To join the digital trend, drivers will need to download the latest version of the Service NSW app and then add the licence to your MyServiceNSW Account.

The digital licence will also allow drivers to view, show and renew that license through the app.

Okay excluding smaller country towns.

Any business in Sydney Metro area.

The card payment terminals run both off both wifi and 4G.

If your a busy cafe in Sydney metro that only reports cash while 95% of cafes have majority card payments you be audited for sure.
