It amazes me the number of accidents on russian roads that are on Youtube.
Without being nasty to the race why are the Russian drivers so crazily stupid? Is it vodka? Is it the climate and it freezes brains as well? Is it just the dull damp depressing weather? Or is it the huge number of dash cams?

The widespread use of dash cams, extreme weather conditions, vodka, dodgy vehicles and they have a population of almost 150 million.

The dash cams provide the media to consume. They were also the reason that so many fantastic images of the meteor that crashed there last year was captured. This article from the Washington Post will comfort the OP though ... https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...of-the-meteor/ about Russian Drivers. . |

I'll stand by the Russians in their driving ability.
First off Vladimir Chagin won 7 Dakar Rallys driving Kamaz trucks. Then there's this little video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTDn604ipYY. There are lots of dash cam vids of appalling driving from Russia, however we're starting to see a lot from other countries as well. Personally I think it's more to do with the number of dash cams in their vehicles. |

Insurance fraud is common in Russia.
This is why everyone has dash cams. Plus the population is 7 times great than Oz ...then factor in the weather. Australians don't drive much better. |

Some of those accidents blow my mind. And some are so dumb like just randomly turning into oncoming traffic!

Rubbish, Australians are the most polite and rule following drivers on the planet. Don't listen to the government propaganda that we need to be nannyed to death.
Driving in Russia is an experience. Traffic is bad, roads are crap but it's nicer driving there as you don't stare at your speedo and get frustrated or bored like here. Russian are crazy though they will sometimes form a new lane on the other side of the road if the traffic is bad enough. Lots of cars have dash cams but I was told it was more to keep the insurance companies honest. |

i dont think the country has the money to do road safety over there, looking at the many video clips , it appears roads and road safety is pretty low on the priority list, not a place i would rushing to visit.

I think it comes down to the economy changing ... and people who never drove or could afford to drive .... can now ... and the lack of expertise/knowledge/licence probably is a contributing factor to add to all of this .... and insurance fraud is rife over there as mentioned before.

Population. Weather. Staggeringly common fitment of dash cams. That's about it.
People seem to have a problem with the concept of "more people on the road, more accidents"...I mean come on...the authorities here still seem honestly puzzled when the road toll goes up during holiday breaks, when the number of road users increases dramatically in a short period of time. Naturally...and tragically...you're going to statistically have more accidents. |
