If the motor is allowed to get hot and stay hot, you get a heat soak in the motor, on a EFI motor there are sensors to pick up this sort of thing and when they do they will pull out some ignition timing and/or possibly add more fuel to stop pinging, doing this will reduce power but keep the motor safe.
The problem is worse on a forced induction engine as intake air temperatures rise under boost and if you start with warm air or warm components you will be loosing more power

Take a few bags of ice and leave on inlet between runs...
This is where w2a intercooler help in theory, but a weight gain.... In this heat at present all cars are effected....

Mine did the best mph it ever did hot lapping (6 or so runs back to back)on a high 30c day, maybe the extra heat in the manifold helped with efficiency and so made more hp.
This is a carbed engine, and the motor was not one to get hot, even hot lapping only got water temps to 195f,I think EFI engines appreciate the cool down though.. |

Thought it could have been running a little lean and hotter ambient temps helped??...

Might be an interesting exercise to do a pass at different water tempeture's, to see where it will make it's most power, consistantly. Some motor's will make more power at a lower temp range say around the150 mark, some at 180. Every motor is different.
