Hoping someone might be able to shed some light on this problem.
My daughter has a Focus LX 2009 plate and done about 214k km and has an intermittent fault when going to start. Keys in and turned to start and nothing happens but a message pops up with all warning lights illuminated. Message says "Engine malfunction". Turn it off walk away and come back an hour later and it starts!!!! Weird. Was intermittent at the start but now is more frequent. Tends to do this in hot weather and can sometimes happen even when the car is driving and it cuts out with all warning lights on and the same message. Had it into an auto-electrican and they say hand it into a ford garage as there's a control module fault. Not sure what a control module does....anyone know. It's beginning to sound expensive. Just curious if anyone has experienced this problem before. Otherwise into a ford garage |

It does sound like a module malfunction but there are several to choose from. If you don't have access to a scan tool (there are instructions here how to get and operate a phone based app) then take it to Supercheap and get a scan done then post the codes here.

Cheers RW and thanks for the advice. Unfortunately no access to a scan tool. When you say there's a phone app available....how do I/we get hold of that? Is it a download through the forum and is it just a case of having the codes on your phone. Presume we'll still need to go to a supercheap ( presume garage as not familiar with the Oz terms yet) to still get the scan done?
We'll try the first phone app first. May have to get the Focus towed as it won't start at the mo. |

This is the software https://forscan.org/home.html but you also need an ELM327 or similar bluetooth device (e.g. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mini-Elm...fM4tG3BfabXmWA and https://www.jaycar.com.au/obd-ii-eng...ology/p/PP2145 ) to plug into the OBD port.
Even buying a cheap self contained scanner like this is probably cheaper than a tow https://www.autobarn.com.au/sp-tools-obd-scan-tool Forscan and the bluetooth devices will do more but if you are not technically inclined might be harder to get working.
