Default Why Ford sells the parts so expensive?

Hi people. One of my mate had a little accident last week. His front bar is gone. He drives 2006 350Z track model. Absolute beauty. We went to Nissan together to get a new front bar. I was expecting 350z front bar to be so expensive. I thought, I am driving an Aussie car so parts should be much cheaper than the imports. We picked up brand spanking new plastic genuine 350Z front bar for $400. I couldn't believe it. Ford quoted me $1500 for the Ba xr6 front bar. This is unbelievable. I told my mate and he laughed at me. Now how the f..k a local car manufacturer's parts are more expensive than the imports? I can't believe it :

Mate I'm right on you with this one, qouted $1400+ for a BF XR front bar. ~$1000 trade price. And personally... fit & finish on some of these bars is not spot on.

It's just a joke. Can't say it would help much with insurance premiums. I'm sure the insurance companys calculate these things when they are working out insurance rates too.

There's only so many BA XR6/XR8's

Economies of scale, I'd imagine, would probably have something to do with it.

Then the same argument would apply to the overall cost of the car... which would make the Falcon a $100k car.

In recent years, Ford have really had to fight hard on price to get people into their cars, not to mention production volumes falling. To make up the profit, they gouge you on parts instead, because how many people compare parts prices when shopping for a new car? But once you're in one, its a little late to haggle on parts.

Try having a FPV. $700 x 2 for the grilles, $270 x 2 for the foglight surrounds, $700 for the lower intake insert and you haven't even paid for the bar, fog lights and painting yet.

that does`nt seem too bad to me, there are a lot of parts in that motor, they all have to be cast, machined, assembeled, then there is warranty on the product, i`d put money on it a small hilux diesel would cost similar or more.

This thread should be renamed "why do all car manufacturers sell parts so expensive".

One of my friends priced up a genuine TRD bodykit for an Aurion. Was somethnig stupid like $10,000 unpainted.

A headlight for an Mitsubishi FTO was around $1000

Even basics like brake pads on something like a Rodeo are $250 genuine when you can go down the road and get some for $50.

Genuine wheels are a killer. I remember one of the E series GTs were over $5000 for the set without tyres.

Do Ford still require a VIN to purchase T-Series parts? They used to - they took model protection seriously. Still do going by the outragous prices.

Surely economies of scale dont account for the entire price difference between XT and XR - I see as many XR's on the road as XT's. Even a lot of the FG taxis in Melbourne are XR6's now.

When the tyre place smashed a trailer into the back of my 1 week old Kia, I expected the worst... but on the invoice from the smash repairers it quoted $250 for the rear bar (parts (unpainted) only).

I also went to Holden to price a new front bar for the HSV Senator (VX) and I nearly fell off my chair - $3000 unpainted!

Manufacturers make their money not so much from the initial sale, but from spare parts over the life of the car. With the volumes produced in Oz, each component will cost more than some other cars. I'm still surprised that the 350Z bar was only $400, but not surprised at Ford's prices at all!

If you are only producing about 56,000 Falcons of various models, and then break down unique parts to the various models, yeah, I would imagine that the parts would be expensive.

Here in the US a car selling only 56,000 units would be slated for removal from the line-up because it would not be cost effective. Yeah, economy of scale has to be a huge factor for Ford of Australia.

Slightly off topic Steve but I was just reading you Interceptor project link and couldn't help but noticing re Mad Max "Also all the voices in the film had been dubbed over with American actor's voices"

We don't dub over Die Hard with Australian actors voices?? As far as i knew both Australians and Amercians speak english? Sorry I just find that quite amusing. :

if you look at the parts and the way they're priced, a large chunk of the more 'desirable' parts (XR, FPV, ghia) are priced a LOT higher than your joe basic replacement part.
Much of this has to do with model protection.

Or at least thats the excuse Ford give us....

The 350z bumper fits on the 350z only (AFAIK)

I guess Ford don't want people buying a base model and cheaply making it look like a GT or XR.

a ba xt front bar is about $280 from ford ,so a lot cheaper than the 350z.the reason they charge so much for the xr6 and xr8 bar is because they dont want people like you and me changing their xt to look like and xr.

So there should be a rebate if you can return said broken bit.

But no. FPV make you jump through hoops to prove you actually own one, and still bend you over on the price.
