"Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger top the charts as Holden Commodore hits rock-bottom
Holden’s Commodore has posted the lowest monthly sales figure in its illustrious 40-year history, with less than 600 registered in April.
Official VFACTS sales figures due to be released later this week are expected to show Holden sold just 587 Commodores last month – almost 60 per cent less than in April 2017.
But that number will reduce even further given it still includes a number of homegrown VFII Commodore sedans and wagons, although Holden sold just 26 locally made Utes and two Caprices last month.
Commodore sales have hovered at historical lows of less than 1000 for the past three months, with the previous low of 737 recorded in February – the same month Holden launched its imported ZB Commodore and posted its lowest overall monthly sales figure since 1948.
With the exception of Barina, Trax and Trailblazer, all other Holden models also posted slower sales in April, when Holden’s overall sales were down 21.2 per cent – more than any other top-10 brand.
Nevertheless Holden climbed from 10th on the sales chart and a paltry 4.9 per cent market share in March to sixth and 5.8 per cent in April, when the overall market slipped by more than two per cent (more than six per cent based on equivalent selling days) but remains up year-to-date.
That’s a far cry from the 21.6 per cent share the former market leader held as recently as 2002, but the Commodore wasn’t the only mid-size model to experience a sales slump in April.
At just over 560, sales of Toyota’s new imported Camry were also about 60 per cent down on the same month last year, while the Mazda6 was down almost 40 per cent at 180 (less than the Kia Stinger), Ford shifted 208 Mondeos (down more than 30%) and Honda sold just five Accords.
Once again the Toyota HiLux, with almost 3600 sales, was the top-selling vehicle in April, followed by the Toyota Corolla (2979), Ford Ranger (2796) and Mazda3 (2261).
But while Toyota sales lifted by 3.5 per cent to 16,647, Mazda’s slumped by 10.5 per cent to 7723 following sales declines by all models but the BT-50 4x4.
Less than 600 sales behind in third was Hyundai, which was up 4.1 per cent despite its volume-selling i30 falling 3.8 per cent to just over 1900 sales.
After its stellar rise to third overall in March, Mitsubishi remained solid in fourth with more than 5500 sales, the ASX topping the small SUV segment for the month and year, and the Eclipse Cross adding all-incremental sales.
After Holden, fifth-placed Ford was the biggest loser in April with a near-17% sales decline to 4822 sales, followed by Holden, Kia, Subaru, Volkswagen and Nissan – the only other top-10 brand to go backwards in April, by 9.6 per cent."

The good bit is the Red Lion (4576) has improved its standings in the top 10 brands, rising to number six after falling to the bottom rung of March’s results. But it’s even more woe for the Holden Commodore, with 116 of the 587 total attributed to dwindling stocks of the locally built VFII, not the new German one. Do the numbers, and ZB mustered only 471 buyers, meaning it fell behind Astra (497), old stock of the Captiva (521) and the Captiva’s replacement, the Equinox (506) for the month.

I know Ford are more interested in selling high specification/high profit 4x4 Rangers, but I wish they would push the 4x2 models a bit more. They are not far off having the best selling vehicle in the country, both monthly and yearly. The marketing value of being "Number 1" could help to offset some of the bad media they have been getting lately.

Theres simply no money at that end of the spectrum. Its all price driven and with no cheap petrol model its hard to compete.

Those numbers aren't real flash for Ford either! Understand Mustang numbers down as new model awaits though.
Is there any where else in the world where Toyota has the dominance over their rivals like they do in Australia? Over double the vechicles sold over second place and pretty much 4 times the vehicles sold than Ford!
USA March figures.

Quite incredible Australia's love affairs with Toyota!

Toyota's advantage is they compete across a very broad range of categories.

They are also very aggressive with fleet and rental.

Camry had a poor one at 1100 or so, but still managed to slaughter the entire mid/large FWD segment.

Suprisingly 208 Mondeo sales was good for 2nd place in the medium under 60k segment.

Holden are still trying to claim the Commodore is a large car yet everyone knows it's now a medium, which is a dying segment, and low profit margin. Not a market you want to be spending money on right now trying to flog a new model in, especially one with such an iconic badge

Seems to be a global trend too, hence Ford going to axe the Fusion.

Toyota sold twice as much as Ford and Holden combined, Ford might have won the local battle, but the war rages on.

*Waits for the spin doctors to tell us that selling 4k cars with 20k profit margins is somehow better business sense than selling 16k cars with 10k profit margins or something along those lines..

Im not sure i buy into the whole numbers down due to new model line as the sole reason either, It would suggest that the people who bought in March figured the extra month wait was too much to overcome and pulled the trigger whilst the significantly reduced April buyers figured the next model wasn't worth waiting for.

“Oh What a Feeling”! Licence to print money.My prediction(for what it is worth) Ranger will never get past Hilux.Again, Hilux smashes Ranger in the 4x2 sales and also a good sales lead over the Ranger 4x4.Must admit I like the Ranger(quite a lot) but...would buy a Hilux over one any day.Just think Ford are quite toxic the way they treat their customers.Cheers

Maybe you should compare the actual product on offer by those brands. Ford / GM range is very limited in Australia. Toyota is also a market leader in their home country .

Still only down 0.2% compared to April 2017 so i dont think it made that much difference.

Correct, Q1 was stronger than 2017 but April was slightly softer...
From the Link I posted earlier,

April is a slow month, business waits to see what the May budget has in store plus the EOFY sales kick in soon.

However, with 473 ZB Commodore sales, it was at this point Holden realised it was in serious doodoo.

No, go back and read post 12 for the real reason
All top 10 brands were down in April compared to March
Easter holidays had nothing to do with it

I wonder if Lincoln will have their version of the Taurus still available - that could be a nice import. If only they dropped the Taurus name for Au, and kept the "500" name that they ran it under for a while - I think it was an alternative to having a Taurus "Classic" for the outgoing model.

Just proves that manufacturers can sometimes get the planets to align enough to build at least one good car from hundreds of thousands of lemons. All the while my girlfriends 3 yr old craptiva continues to fall apart, electrics fail and engine to rattle like a washing machine full of spanners on start up. Not to mention the random idle hunting. Absolute hunk of ****.
