Would someone be able to tell me weather the splines on a mk1 capri steering column are the same as mk2 escort ? I have read that they are and a mk2 escort boss will fit capri but is escort boss shorter than capri, because i have got a nice vintage deep dish steering wheel and im thinking of using the mk2 escort boss to make up for the extra depth of the wheel. So basically will the mk2 escort boss fit onto the mk1 capri column ?

I thought I heard somewhere that the Mk1 Escort/ Mk1 Capri / Mk1-2 Cortina were Imperial, and Mk2 Escort was Metric.
Happy to be proven wrong by more knowledgeable Escort people. |

Ok, in what way is the mk2 escort column metric, is it the spline size or the thread for the retaining nut. Can anyone elaborate on the size difference if it is the spline, because I am able to machine things easily to match aslong as there is enough material to deal with. So which spline has a larger outside diameter ? |

Capri and Escort steering columns aren't interchageable like Escorts.
Best to leave Mk 2 Escort stuff in a Mk 2 and keep Capri stuff separate. I've had both cars for years and can easily get confused until you try and fit the rare RS 4-spoke steering wheel to your Mk3 Capri. Turned out it was for a Mk 2 Escort....luckily I had an RS2000 at the time where it found a new home. |

I had a chance to get the mk2 escort boss cheap, don't think I will worry about it now and get the proper capri one. Now I have another question, does anyone know if you can get a boss that is shorter than the standard SAAS boss because I have a quite deep dish wheel.

If you have access to machining, as stated above, should ebe a relatively simple shorten of a longer one. Just need an indexing head to get the new screw holes right, or use the wheel as a template.

Yeh thats what i have also thought of. I havent seen the SAAS boss in the flesh yet but i should be able to part off the excess length then drill and tap holes to suit my steering wheel pcd.
