By DANIEL DeGASPERI THE Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) will not retest the Ford Mustang following its shock two star safety result, despite an update to airbag deployment and active safety features that crippled its score. Instead, the vehicle safety watchdog will revise the Ford sportscar’s score to three stars in light of the updates. Sales of the Ford Mustang have remained unaffected by the twostar ANCAP result handed down in December 2015, and it continues to be Australia’s top-selling sportscar as it heads towards a mid-year switch to a facelifted model. The original test score raised questions not only directed towards Ford, but also ANCAP owing to a testing procedure that had changed significantly. While 2+2 coupes would now be tested for back-seat performance, despite the Toyota 86 among others having not been tested with rear child seats, the top overall score could also be no higher than the lowest score of four criteria (occupant protection front, rear, pedestrian and active safety). |

At least ANCAP admitted it would be a 5 star car if it wasn't for the rear seats.
Such hypocrisy that no other 2+2 coupes have ever been tested though. |

I agree. However, wasn’t one reason for the low score that the front seat passengers head hit either the dash or the pillar?

That's not uncommon and the frontal score was still good. But Ford have fixed that too and wanted it re-tested, but ancap said no for some reason

Yep.
Thats average for its category. If you bothered to do a bit of research, you would find: 2015 BMW Z4 *** 2015 Mazda MX-5 **** 2015 Audi TT **** Now, those cars all had high scores on the passenger/child side, none had rear seat passengers to affect the score...plus, they were tested under old NCAP rules... Mustang actually scored higher in driver protection over the Z4.

That’s correct.
If people bothered to compare the actual crash test results they would see Mustang performed very well with lower HIC (Head Injury Criterion) than many cars rated 5 Stars under the old testing regime. This was just a beatup at the time and the chairman of ANCAP should be ashamed of himself. Quote:

They already do...Mustang was tested by Euro NCAP. ANCAP use Euro NCAP ratings, cars don't need to best tested here anymore.

3 star ANCAP to the 2018 ratings is equivalent to 5 star or more in the 'old' rating system. It only looks poor because very few cars have been assessed to the 2018 criteria I do think all manufacturers have been very poor about communicating this change to buyers |

Not sure this issue bothers anyone except those with no intention of buying one.

ANCAP accepted the overseas test for the new commodore but would not accept the overseas test for the mustang. They are just trying to be noticed.

At the end of the day you either want a Mustang or you don't. Three stars or five wouldn't sway me.
Pretty sure a FGX wouldn't get 5 stars if tested in 2018 |

Just dont be a rear passenger in a mustang.
And dont crash. Because you dont have your own door to get out.

if you need a ding ding ding to remind you to put a seat belt on ,it says nothing about how safe the car is but how stupid the person is
