There's a reason they don't make the crewman anymore...

Yes, its called a new platform known as the VE.
If the VE was based off the previous platform, the Crewman would still exist, possibly along with the Monaro as well.
However, Holden couldnt afford to engineer the new platform to suit anything other than the current line up - the very same reason the Sportwagon is based on the sedan platform.

And, holden were making profit back then...Holden saved money as the VT platform was a stetched and widend opel omega platform...

The wagon and ute are actually the same platform...

but to be fair we don't know which models were profitable for Holden. they may have lost some on some models but made it up on others.

A concept was made during the AU days, but it wasn't produced. The Crewman doesn't exist anymore so Ford didn't need it anyway.

True and a great call on their behalf.

But considering the 2011 4x4 ute market segment is now a much larger part of than at the time it's easy to look back with rose coloured glasses and think, it would now be great for them to have R5 too.

It could have made sense if they'd released it now, but back then the SUV segment was starting to boom and the Territory came in and smashed it wide open. Perfect timing and Geoff Polites pulled off a masterstroke.

The dual cab ute segment didn't really start taking off until a few years ago, so if they'd released the R5 in 2003/4 it probably wouldn't have gone that well. Didn't really matter as the Falcon ute was selling in really high numbers back then. It would be a great addition to the Falcon ute lineup if it was available now, but Ranger fills that space anyway now so its a bit of a mute point.

I think the fact that crewman does not exist anymore and was never a volume seller is clear indication of the reason. Reaching an acceptable compromise between rear leg room, rear seat position and tray size is difficult to do on existing platforms without prohibitive production costs and subsequent RRP. Crewman did not do this well and was a liability to Holden, therefore it got the axe. If you ask me ford did the right thing not producing one.

Until you wanted to sit in the back I bet. Look how short that rear door is.

I personally would love this style of ute. I would be happy to sacrifice 200mm of tray length to get better rear cabin space.

Well my Courier isnt too far off it, I have people fighting over the front seat!

Im in agreeance with you. Truth be told i dont carry many passengers in the back for long anyway so it fits the bill.
