Exclamation Getting a new job offer then a better one ! HELP

Hi all,

Well I am in the same boat as quite a few on here in looking for a new job.

The search for me is basically over, but it is now put me in a very difficult position.

I have to verbally accept Job1 today, but Job2 the one I really want will come back to me till tomorrow if the position can be offered (90%+ sure it will).

So if i accept Job1 verbally based pending checking the contract, then Job2 does get offered, what will be legal obligation in regards to Job1.

For Job1 I am the preffered candidate and they are offering the position to me first, so stalling Job1 will more then likely mean I will miss out, and if Job2 does not happen, I am back looking (I hate looking for a job).

Regards,
Jason :Up_to_som

AFAIK unless you have physically signed a contract you are not legally obliged to go and work there. But im not a legal eagle.

He may be onto something... accept job1 and then see how job2 pans out... if you get job2 then tell job1 that "things have changed, sorry".

If you have a moral objection to such behaviour, then personally i'd be inclined to wait for job2. Can you imagine the feeling if you took job1 but was then offered job2 but had to decline? Could possibly feel worse than missing out on both of them...

This is a tough one for me to answer - i think your decision will really come down to your sense of morals, values and how much more you REALLY want job2?

Morally I have no problem in doing it, but legaly i dont want to be in the $hit.

I really want Job2, but at the same time I NEED to get a job, otherwise I would decline Job1 and see what happend.

I always thought you got 24 hours to decide on offers like that or at least a 24 hour cooling off period if you do accept.... could be wrong though.

Take Job 1 but only verbal ,then if job 2 comes up and its a better job and you really want it ,call job 1 back and say after sleeping on it Ive had second thouhgts and decline the job. Try not to leave it more than a day
Ive had some one even sign and still never turn up on the first day ,Cuz they never left there job and got a better offer for them to stay.

as said, my thoughts are, if you havent put pen to paper, your not legally obliged. If you take job1 and job2 works out tommorow, flcik job 1, i am sure they have a few people in the line

Well I started one job, did the orientation and was about to start training, accepted job2 the morning after the orientation and was offered job3 that afternoon, which is what I took. I "resigned" from the first job, and called the job2 agency place that afternoon and told them I can't accept their offer anymore.

Both the job i resigned at and the job agency were mighty ИИИИed off, and they both hanged up on me, but nothing eventuated.

I say accept the first, I mean what can they do to you? Make you work? All your doing really is resigning... I mean you haven;t even signed any contracts....

What happenned in the end?
I would have told the 1st Job too wait, I have done it previosly, and many people have done it to the companies that have worked for. If they are seriosly interested in you they will wait the 24hrs.

a verbal is a contract, but it is hard to prove if they ever wanted to take you to court over it, (which I doubt they would). I would go with the advice of the others, tell them you want to review the contract before making a final decision, buying you time to get the offer for job 2.

Well I have accepted Job1 verbally pending checking the contracts, I will know about Job2 this morning.

Both Jobs I would be more then happy to do, Job2 I would enjoy more and its closer to home and better pay, hence my whole delima in the first place.

I've been in the exact same position before too. You did the right thing in accepting Job 1, if Job 2 is accepted then just resign from Job 1.

Yeah, you did the best course of action. I've had a similar experience before. I went for a few jobs and got an offer for two on the same day - so I had to pick the one I thought would be better.

The job I chose in the end was terrible.... but I quit and got a better job in the end anyway! :P

From when I started actually looking for a job took me over a month easy, and applying for around 5 positions per day, i used seek, my career, and careerone and went through them twice a day, met plenty of recruiters but nothing happened, only with Job1 I got to meet the employer and get offered, Job2 is who I know.

So geeting a Job turned out harder then I expected thats for sure.

anyway i dont want to steal the thread, just thought i'd say well done.

:

Job2 has come through, the one I want at a very nice salary as well.

So I have the Job I wanted : , just waiting in the letter of offer before I inform Job1 thanks but sorry.

I have to do some simple tests as well for Job2, a phsycometric, some numbers/maths test, and a lateral thinking test.

anyone done any of these sort of tests before.

Yes I have.. yesterday in fact, but mine was for a government position so may be a little different.
Psychometric tests are there to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses as well as to see how you think, interact and behave. numbers maths is obvious, they'll get you to do simple mathematicaly problems that get progressively harder and more complex. Same goes with lateral thinking or problem solving skills.
You can't really learn for any on of the tests, but having a clear head is an advantage, try to ignore it's a test and forget about what you need to do to the EA later that night.

Now for a little self praise and thread Hi-jacking. I have passed all my aptitude, psych and medical testing for department of corrections with flying colours. I was especially happy that my left hand (the buggered one) performed well and enabled me to pass the grip test with the strength being in the average area for my age group. That's even with buggered tendons and fingers.

As for you Big fella, congrats for getting what you want, can I ask what field it is in?
As for the rest looking for work, Good Luck

I had a 5 foot tall asian doc give me the *COUGH*, cough test. I coughed really loud so as many people outside the office could hear me.

I did get the sexiest physio there next tho, and she was impressed by my flexibility and strength :

Yeah ive done cognitive ability tests for my job. Simple. You're a smart lad - you'll do fine.

Its really more about profiling you as opposed to yay or nay on the job...

BTW - congratulations.

Boasting rights hey.

I did psych and aptitude testing about 18 months ago for a change in my army profession (even reserves need to meet regular standards)

I was informed that I scored in the top 2% of the army. Not bad if you consider that not all the army are dumb *** grunts like somepeople think.
I won't even tell you my IQ,
