Defiantly a reliable car, i got one and it has copped and absolute beating and has never played up once, the thing gets paddock bashed, ran into fences and driven with no water on days over 30 degrees gets driven daily and still runs as good as ever.

As you can see by my Sig , both my daughters have Lasers (KH & KJ) both are great little cars . You should get a very good KH (93) or a reasonable KJ (94) for that price . (Both Lasers are 1.8 EFI , 16 valve twin overhead cam)

Originally we had an 1986 AS Telstar they both learnt on , had over 355,000 k's on it , only vary basic repairs were needed , but it is still running around town 12 months later ,( the guy who bought it says It's still running great) . It was very reliable for us , the wife & I drove it heaps as well , we didn't think twice going on a 3-400k trip in it .

So I could recommend any of these three .

AE92 Corolla. You can't kill them.

Otherwise a Mazda 626/Telstar or a Camry would fit the bill also.

You cannot go past a Corolla! My last one (AE101 - 95mdl) copped over 300000kms of torture, neglect and abuse and in all it's time the only thing EVER fixed was a drive shaft (and only because I ripped a boot and then left it for about 50000 odd kays!) Was used for carting loads and general thrashing and never missed a beat!

Sold it just recently, but was still going strong!

It's true the corollas are very reliable, my sisters one gone without a service for 18 months and ran great, and still runs great, people think it wasn't worth the money if you compare it to a falcon.

This could be interesting. And it has things alot of the other options don't, like good brakes... plus its a MkII Golf, they never die.

These are also a very good car (mate had one - its a VW Golf MkII chassis with a Golf MkIII engine). A good one can be gotten for 4k (he bought his for $4100, 97 model, 100,000km, fully optioned one too). Has such things you might want a young driver to have like ABS brakes, dual airbags etc etc. I wouldn't get that paticular one though, don't like cheap cars with someone else's mods and the paint isn't looking good on that example... but I guess that's why he's selling it for 2k!

chalk another one up for toyota for me - they seem to be able to cop an absolute beating and still keep going, and parts are pretty readily available and cheap - have an old camry station wagon I flogged for couple of years - have passed it onto my mate and its still going mint with 320,000 plus on the clock. My mum had an ex-rental corolla a few years ago - had 180,000+ on clock and drove like new, never gave any trouble whatsoever.

AE92 with the 16v twinkie engine (standard in the SX)

O.K this is for a daughters first car...remember teenage females like to feel/look "Cool" for 4k there is one fantastic option Toyota Celica various models from between 1972 and 1996 can be had for around 4k... sure they area "Coupe" and ya may pay a few more dollars on insurance but at the end of the day they are cool, Isnt that what we all want

I used to recommend N13 Pulsar as a first car, but they are getting on a bit. The best ones left will be well under $4,000. Wouldnt look at a GL but any other model has 4W disks, power steer, most have air. They have a Holden motor that's easy to get parts for. No twin cam complications (expense) if you have head problems. The wreckers are full of them.....
At 79Kw they have heaps more power than equivalent laser, most of which have carb engines.

I'd look at a toyota cressida. RWD and actually qo quite well, with serious toyota reliability.

Engine known for head gasket problems.

If you get one transplant a CA18DET into it. ;)

The run of the mill Celicas shared drivetrain components with Coronas/Camrys on a few of the series at least, so they would have to stand up pretty well. It's always frustrating to see people buy cars like these, abuse them, neglect them and they just keep running, while you treat your baby well and problems pop up here and there.

It has to be a Toyota! But... get something a bit more interesting then a Camry or standard Corolla...

AE93 Corolla SX (Only came in manual) - The 4AGE is a sweet revving thing.

ST162 Celica SX - The only Celica to get. Came 2nd in Wheels car of the year for 1985.

MX83 Cressida (Only came in Automatic) - Won five Wheels comparison tests over five years.

I myself decided to get a ST162 Celica SX for my first car. Light and easy to use controls, great visibility, and a beautiful engine with a great gearbox (manual). On top of this, fuel consumption is great, the car looks good, and it has electric windows, electric mirrors, electric sunroof, air-conditioning, not much else I need.

my laser is a 2 door , mines a kc tx3 , you can pick up really good condition KF/KH lasersor tx3s for under 4 grand easy , replacement parts are not going to cost a arm and a leg and aftermarket stuff is cheap as well . my car got and still gets a flogging . i learnt to drive manual in mine on my L's. when ever we go on a longish trip the laser is the choice , its cheap on fuel , its smooth and reliable
