Sky News is breaking Rudd's tenure as prime minister is almost finished, they're holding a meeting to see whether or not he'll remain PM or Julia Gillard will replace him.

Interesting developments within the last few hours.

I hope this thread doesn't get closed as it's not a political discussion, just amazing that this has developed so quick. Many are saying it's extrodinary and history in the making.

Usually the ones that get closed are done so because it's that team vs this team and the war never stops. If this one doesnt do that and resort to a never ending flame fest I'de imagine it would be left open.

I don't think that K.Rudd will be back, and I also think that this will screw Labor coming into an election, worse than they have already managed to do themselves.

Kevin Rudd's leadership is hanging by a thread after his support base vanished following a push to oust him led by Right factional operators in Victoria and South Australia.

Mr Rudd announced late tonight he would put his leadership to the vote in caucus tomorrow at 9am. He said the vote came after a request from his deputy, Julia Gillard.

Ms Gillard has growing support among the caucus of 115 MPs and senators and an increasing number of factions.

These included the National Right, the Victorian Left and most of the NSW Right, including its kingmaker Mark Arbib.

Tomorrow's vote came after a dramatic night of meetings between party heavyweights. Right-wing powerbrokers spent the day counting numbers in an effort to encourage Ms Gillard to run.

She met Mr Rudd last night but her office said it was just a routine scheduled meeting, the third between the pair yesterday. But the meeting was joined by senior ministers, including Anthony Albanese, Wayne Swan and Lindsay Tanner.

It was understood Ms Gillard was reluctant to have a messy challenge and it is understood there were efforts being made to push Mr Rudd to stand down.

The push to oust Mr Rudd was led by the Victorian senator David Feeney, Victorian MP Bill Shorten, and South Australian senator Don Farrell, all right-wing heavyweights.

Sources said they met Ms Gillard this afternoon in an attempt to persuade her to run.

Rudd's secret polling on his leadership

Ms Gillard has repeatedly rejected any suggestion she would try to oust Mr Rudd. Senator John Faulkner who denied any knowledge of the party’s right canvassing party members for numbers on ABC Television earlier joined Treasurer Wayne Swan, frontbencher Anthony Albanese in the prime minister’s office.

Trade Minister Simon Crean has backed Mr Rudd, saying he wasn’t aware of any leadership challenge.

"I do not support any leadership challenge," Mr Crean said.

"Any loose talk or idle speculation on this matter is counterproductive.

"I urge solidarity behind the leader. I support Kevin as the leader."

Nine News reported that NSW senator Mark Arbib, Senator Feeney and parliamentary secretary Bill Shorten told Ms Gillard earlier on Wednesday they’d lost confidence in Mr Rudd and wanted her to run.

She gave no answer.

Tomorrow would be the last day for the rebels to mount a challenge because Parliament will rise for the eight-week winter break and many expected Mr Rudd to call an election before Parliament returned.

Mounting a leadership challenge is much more difficult when the house is not sitting because all the MPs and senators have to be recalled.

A series of policy failures, poor polls and the decision to go to war with the mining industry have all contributed to Mr Rudd’s plunging fortunes among his colleagues.

The Coalition fears a change to Ms Gillard. Although she bears responsibility for many of the government’s poor decisions, including shelving the emissions trading scheme and the controversial school buildings program, she would be harder to beat than Mr Rudd.

An Essential Media poll released this week showed that both she and Mr Rudd, however, were preferred ahead of Mr Abbott as prime minister by about the same proportion of voters.

Easy, one recklessly overspends on Australia's accounts while the other one spends it's whole time in Government paying it back only to be voted out. Then the cycle repeats itself.

On a different note though I am truley amazed and shocked that the PM can be removed at a snap of the unions fingers. Shows who is really in power in this country. I was looking forward to voting KRudd out. While I would never have a problem with a female as PM, I sadly think there will be people out in the community that won't look past this next election and vote for Labor due to this. Opinion polls are improving for Labor without any policy changes yet due to this reason. Same crappy ship, different captain.

yep, humans are a fickle bunch. howard got voted out because he wouldn't commit to a full term and no one wanted costello. gillard will possibly get voted in because of the novelty of having a female pm. policies don't even come into it.

then we jump on a forum and whinge about the govt....

In reality, i feel bad for Rudd...but i was still gonna give him the flick, and the labor party, as long as Conroy is still around...

In all fairness, we are getting royally screwed when it comes to the mining industry...

this is roughly the amount of royalties that have been paid in different year brackets

I believe Mark Knight summed it up brilliantly with a comic he had in the paper not long ago, basically it was a rolls royce ute with two of the Mining exec's sitting on the back with a couple bails of hay, a driver escorting them around the two execs using megaphones going on how the tax will ruin everything at that every australian should be outraged that australia will loose everything...and in the back-ground all the Australian people are following them saying, yes!

It is unfortunate that the Super Tax was his undoing, but i believe it is something that needs to be rectified!

Remember the Libs started this internet filter policy. Conroy just went on with it. When the government can bring in another form of control (and since 9/11 they have done their best to remove our freedom to keep us free) they will.

Abbott must be rubbing his hands together tonight.....

Cant say im a huge fan of a system that allows a non elected PM....

In my mind a spill should lead to an automatic election, let the people pick THEIR PM.....

and while we are at it, ditch this preference idea. a vote for anybody but the big two should stay where it went. if i wanted to vote labor / liberal, i would do so. might as well ditch the independents seeing as a vote for them effectively counts for nothing.

Wow is this seriuosly happening?
This country gas to have one of the most unorganised and silly governments in the world. NSW are having a major overhaul of the sate leaders, and the country doesn't know who is leading it? How can prime ministers swap months out from an election, and how do we know that who we elect will be in for full term?

All we need is stability and a group of leaders with level heads and fresh, reasonable ideas.
