id rather see more patrol cars on the road or something, not this thing which will probably never be used in anger.

thats the bit im struggling with... last time i looked qld wasnt baghdad, or tripoli, or even LA.
with a police force that screams under funded, and a state govt that was selling everything up to try and balance the budget i just dont see how something like this could be a high priority.

Well if you base it on the 2012 movie yes, but if you base it on Mad Max, its a different story

I'd rather see them put laptops in the cars..only a very small number of patrol cars have a laptop.

An awful lot have a laptop system but their use use is pretty limited in their role and many officers are not a fan.

I know the engineer who is (trying) to certify this particular vehicle, Flappist is on the money again.
IMO it is fit for purpose.

It is only a waste of money if you are not the officer that has to approach a siege situation without a covered approach or move in to deploy EOD devices as shown on the video. If you are those officers this vehicle could be quite useful. I am sure any gunshot victim rescued by such a vehicle would also agree. Watch the news a bit, people do get shot and seiges do happen, it is the world in which we live. I am sure a couple more GD cops or 50 laptops will not fulfil the same role.

In other news I think QPS will get a new helicopter once the results of the flood inquiry come home to roost.

Can't see a problem with having at least on or two of these in each state, bit late to place an order when you need it, with people saying wow I wish we had an armored vehicle in the next siege situation.

I bet they will be glad they have it next time its used and when it safes some lifes.

We live in a world where even everyday run of the mill paramedics are trained in the management of widespread chemical weapon attack and carry chemical, biological and radiological capable masks in their everyday safety equipment (there is one in my work bag).

I think you'll find at least part of the funding for this has come from the federal government as each state's domestic police force forms part of the overall national CT response capability.

Same reason they have V8 and turbo 6 pursuit cars but are not allowed to actually use them in anger.

All about bluff and posing.

QPOL would never enter into a situation where the bad guys are armed with anything more than a knife or a sidearm.

It would be rather embarressing to have their toy destroyed and their rambo squad "neutralised" by one person with a M72 and a couple of claymores.

We have SAS for that sort of thing and they appear to be rather good at it....

Nice in theory but considering they have to respond from WA the response time is pretty long.

All states are building an improved anti terrorism capability as a result of federal funding.

Like it or not this is a necessity in the world in which we live and any part of australia is not immune, what happened in Bali could happen here.

That is why QAS (queensland ambulance) receives federal funding for the Special Operations Response Team (SORT) which consists of specially trained, highly skilled paramedics and specialist equipment to deal with terrorist response, mass casualty, urban search and rescue etc. This team works very closely with SERT and I am sure that if they had to get a wounded cop out of a very bad situation, this vehicle would be a great asset and more use than 8 more GD coppers.

As for the M72 and claymores, claymores would not worry this vehicle unless they were buried and directed upward, although I would not like to be inside it as your ears would be bleeding. Claymore fragmentation does not have much in the way of armour penetration. The M72 would be a serious issue, luckily this sort of ordinance is not common. If it was present, nothing short of a M1 Abrams from the australian army would be safe (Bushmaster and LAV25 would still be rather vulnerable if hit in the right place). If it gets to that stage, we are in serious trouble.
