Hi guys, looking for a little advice / assistance
Firstly gotta say that I have a couple of AU Fords, both V8's and are fantastic to drive. Anyway a few years back I had to get the local ford dealer / mechanic around to the house to re establish the hand shake between Key Coder, BEM and PCM. This was done as a favour then but now the dealer wont assist and wants to slug horrific money for a non guaranteed result. Problem has arisen again but this time my father in laws car (AU Forte). that was when local dealer gave price indications which shocked the father inlaw as he is a pensioner that simply cannot afford such a bill. I was able to get around the fault by replacing the ignition barrel, BEM and PCM from the same car, now theirs is running ok. From my understanding the car lost its "hand shake" between above mentioned components, smart shield was enabled locking out the starter motor. All caused by some one trying to start the car with a flat battery Now my questions are: 1, Besides heading to Ford to get the Hand shake Re-established is there some one else that can do the same? 2, Is there a device I can buy that can perform the same function (Re-establish Hand Shake)? 3, If there is a device has anybody used it? Basically I now have another AU ford parked in my garage that I cannot move with out towing it. Thanks in advance Stu |

Just get an ELM327 from Ebay for ~$20 and download Forscan, works a treat.

I think I read a post by you saying you had successfully re-coded. I know that it might be time consuming, but would you mind posting step by step instructions in the AU forum that could perhaps be a sticky? Would be a great help.

Yeah, with an ELM327, Forscan has had PATS reset capability for over a year.

You'll need to register with Forscan to do the PATS programming, which gives you 3 months access to PATS at a time for security. The rest of Forscans functions are always available and also very handy.

Last time I had the BEM and ECU paired by Ford it cost under $100.
I had available for them both sets of keys, the old BEM and the car was taken to them. It was over 5 years ago though

The big problem here is my driveway is not suitable for a flat bed truck or a car trailer to be used. The garage is at the top of a steep driveway. Then now also the local dealer was quoting around $170 per hour and no idea if it would work..... |

A mate of mine has a similar problem. He has been given a well looked after old AU wagon. He has cut a key from the boot lock and Ford is happy to make the wagon a goer for a mere $450. The car looks good but if the motor is stuffed he is $450 plus towing down the drain.
My question is, if he buys a Forscan will this do the job? |

Hey Sox,
Finally at home with the ELM, and Forcan license etc, had a new key cut that was programmed from the original. Here is the next problem the car will only recognise one key so the Pats reset fails, both keys are recognized (first one in the ignition only), when the second is put in the system times out with a reset fail... Had another chip put in the new key but with the same result... Any ideas? |

Pats reset works and saves a fortune in cost with Ford. Did the job using a newly cut key with out a transponder in it (held an old spare key against the new one) then the seco d key was the original ignition key. Once the pats reset was done a system reset had to be done. As soon as that was done the key/pcm/bem was all connected again and car now starts and runs! Thanks for the help guys Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk |

I'm in this sort of bind right now. "Theft attempt" detected by car, won't clear. That attempt was me starting it after several weeks of no harness and all elements powered down.
ForScan says I need the licenced version to do a PATS reset; I'm fine with supporting it. Problem is, I have only one original key, and a clone of that. So - I'm asking for the sake of clarity on the post before mine - if I take the transponder aerial off the lock, can I use the original key in the lock once whilst holding the aerial against it, and the second time just plonk the head of any used AUII/III original key into the aerial (held away from the lock) while I use the original key to turn the ignition on/off for coding in the second key? Or to put it another way, when you first configure a Smartshield key, does it write to the chip? Or is the chip completely passive? Advice would be greatly appreciated. Want to drive the ute! |
