Holden's SS badge registered in US

General Motors have lodged an application to trademark the SS name. Photo: Mark Bean
General Motors lodges application to trademark SS nameplate, fuelling rumours of a Commodore return to the US.

Rumours about the Holden Commodore returning to the United States have intensified following the discovery of a trademark registration application for the name "SS".

In the US Patent and Trademark Office application lodged on April 13 2012, General Motors states the trademark covers "the letters SS in a fanciful design", adding fuel to speculation that Chevrolet's latest model will simply be known as the SS.

However, some reports are suggesting Chevrolet may launch a new SS sub-brand in the same vein as the Chrysler Group, which has launched the performance sub-brand SRT.

Advertisement: Story continues below
Speculation is rife the Holden-built Caprice large sedan will be the new flagship Chevrolet model for the US - that car is already exported as a police car - and could also be the brand's new entrant into the Nascar racing championship.

Chevrolet has used the SS nameplate on its cars since 1961, when it debuted the badge on the flagship version of the Impala - but it was only last week the company decided to trademark the name.

The SS badge has since been used on numerous different models, the most recent of which being the Australian-designed and engineered Camaro coupe which launched in 2009. Images and reports from around the motoring world also show what is purported to be an SS version of the new Impala - but Chevrolet has already confirmed the Nascar racer won't be an Impala.

But even a little bit is too much. PC culture doesn't allow any room for intolerance.

I personally think his opinions were based on what was in his best financial interests.

the VE SS badge looks nothing like a Schutzstaffel insignia...even the Vy would be puhing it.

The original SS was nothing more then an approriated rune (originally meaning sun), as with the swastika.

Haha glad I'm not the only one who sees the resemblance. I always chuckle when passing a highway patrol vehicle with the Nazi insignia on the rear doors. Ah the irony.

The patent filing states that the badge’s first use is in March 2009, and the patent image is nearly identical to the badges currently adorning LS3-powered Camaros. At first glance, it looks like the trademark is just looking to cover an already existing badge, and SS doesn’t mean anything more than the trim level it currently is.

What?

SS Camaro's Cheville's etc....

GM is registering the SS would be nothing more then to prevent it being trademarked by other companies...like what happend to "GT40"...

My guess is, there will be a Impala SS...

Chevy has used SS badging in the US since the early '60s.

As export opportunities for the Zeta platform dry up, and it looks like it will be replaced by a FWD/AWD car; our pro-Holden local media become even more desperate to hype any tenuous link to a Holden export revival.

[OFFTOPIC]I can confirm that, the Spanish version was called the Montero which translates to mountianeer, but in Latin America they are nearly all US imports and are badged as Pajeros which literally means w--ker...

The joke is old in Latin America now and noone seems to be bothered by driving a Mitsubishi W--ker.[/OFFTOPIC]

Drive are referring to it as Holdens SS badge because they are the only GM brand using it at the moment? I know that the quality of journos at Dive/Drivel is sometimes questionable, but surely they know that Chevy was the first to use it?

Its also called the Mitsubishi Shogun in the UK which necessitated a change to Pajero when they introduced it here, to avoid negative connotations from WWII POW abuse etc

Why did they need to change it here, when British troops suffered at the hands of the Japanese just as badly as our troops did, probably in even greater numbers?

No idea brah, that was just how ***** rolled.

Could be that we were more sensitive to the issue being in the same region the atrocities were committed etc whereas Britain was much more removed and suffered just as much if not worse at the hands of the Nazis.

Most likely for an Impala SS.

With the aussie dollar at over $1.03 surely there must be zero chance of selling Commodores over there. Just look how cheap they sold the Pontiac G8 for. They would lose money on every one they sold to get them cheap enough for the US market.

It's actually GM's SS trademark as Holden don't own the SS trademark here. Just as Ford Canada owns the Falcon trademark in Australia.
