Hi I went there in july with wife and kids we all loved it .Had excellent food, eat where the thai's eat, I havent been able to get as good here in melbourne .Better to go with the gf as I test any man to go there on there own and not get tempted. They put the hard word on you even if your gf is getting a massage in the next cubicle. I just found the people really happy and friendly .
If you do the speed boat trip to phi phi island which is beautiful take quels 30 mins before you leave and go with a reputable tour because if it is too rough you can cancel and go another day. The boat ride can be very tough if the weather is rough. Sit at the back of the speed boat it is loud but less bumpy.

You will have a great time .

You'll have a great time. One thing I really enjoyed was Phuket Fantasea. You can go for dinner and the show, or show only. The show was sensational, with elephants, trapeze artists, fireworks, and other animals. It was a real highlight of the trip for us.

Plenty of other things to do.

Hotel has 3 pools, and each has a pool bar.

nicky handlebars is a top place for a feed and a beer before you hit bangla rd. he has about 30 harleys a lambo ferrari gto and a bambino behind glass out the back of the bar and if you get to talkin to kia or nicky they will take you for a look. very nice rooms there as well.
patong it self is pretty dirty and smelly and everything is done on the short cut. you will have someone in your face every 5 seconds wanting to sell you something and dont fall for the guys on scooters with the scratchies. cabs and tuk tuks get 100 baht for every shop they take you to. just go and let them get the stamp and hop back in and go to where ever it was you were going to in the first place. your head is gonna spin try to enjoy it.
its an out there place

Went to phuket at easter, can't wait to go back, great place.

Def do the speed boat of phi phi islands, and canoeing through the islands was really fun, go to dino park at night, good food and good drinks, had the best pina colada ever there! served in a coconut, so refreshing!

Change your cash over there, better exchange rate, atm's everywhere

Bucknaked - god you've been going there a long time, you woulda seen heaps of changes? Busy tourist spot in the 80's? etc??

Dad was in the RAAF and we were stationed in Butterworth. Twice a year we would fly over to Phuket for a weeks break. We always stayed on Patong. In the 80's it was primarily a port for the US Navy to drop anchor in the Harbour. Beach road was a dirt road and the bridge at the South End of Patong was a timber foot bridge. The bars were situated on the South End of Patong along side the beach. Club Andaman Beach suites was one of the original hotels. The road which runs at the back which Jungceylong and Top O Markets didn't exist. It was farm land and you had to watchout for Water Buffaloes. Patong in the 80 was a paradise. You could hire motorbikes, but you were never hassled or harassed and there were only a few places to stay and eat. It really was an escape from the city. While we still love It, I much preferred the Patong of old.

One of my best memories was a trip we did when the US navy were in harbor. Dad being military, he managed to get us onto the USS White Plains via long boat in which we got a tour of the boat by the Commander of the ship. A great experience.

I went back to Penang in 97 for a week. I was amazed at the bridge linking the island to the mainland. We had to drive it . We used to go on the bus from Butterworth to The RAAF school on Penang. Ferry ride was always a highlight. No bridge then.

I have plenty of fond memories from my childhood growing up as a RAAF Brat.

Was going to recommend koh samui full moon party but I just checked and theres 1 on tonight so I dont think there will be one while you are over there. If you have never fired weapons before visit a shooting range. I really enjoyed nailing a sheet of paper with a pump action shot gun

The Mercure Patong is also a nice hotel.

You will probably also get taken to the Gems Gallery. Another place the drivers get a kick back for bringing tourists.
Only decent thing about it is the air con, and a cold drink on arrival.

The jewellery isn't very nice, and not really all that cheap.
