My Mondeo MC TDCI 175,000km has an "Engine Malfunction " message. It runs OK but have given it a bit of a run on expressways to see if it was the DPF blocking up. Not had many long runs lately. Still not cleared the message.
Any ideas or should I take it to a mechanic?. Please don't tell me I have to take it to a Ford dealer. |

First step would be to have the Code read and find out what has flagged the Check Engine Light.
From there, look into the probabilities of the fault, or leave that up to a workshop to do. No you don't have to go back to Ford yet, some independents are good for these faults, but remember, sometimes it has to go back to Ford for their specialist tooling and tech to diagnose, where that proprietary information isn't available for Independent Workshops. That being said I don't think you're there yet. SuperCheap Auto have a Scanning report service for $30, check out what that entails and if you like it have a scan/report.

Had the same thing pop up on my MA just this week @ 189,000 km.
It was also running fine so gave it a good 45 min run on the highway as it also had a lot of short trips leading up to this. Also took it up to 4K RPM from standstill a couple of times and fair to say the exhaust cloud was significant. Long story short got home, turned the car off, waited a couple of mins and started it again - engine light still there. Planned to have it scanned the next day. Jumped in the car in the morning and engine light is off and has been fine since then. I'd be scanning it asap as suggested if you've tried the above, waited and the engine light is still on. I should add I've had this happen once before and took it straight in to be scanned and the DPF was what came up so had a feeling it could be the same thing.

Thanks for help. Will give it another burst on the freeway at around 4000rpm and if not cleared will get it scanned.

1800 rpm is enough. The system just needs normal operating temp to begin a regen.
If it fails then there is likely an issue with the fuel vaporizer or the differential pressure sensor, not the DPF. I would do a code scan first to save diesel. |

Had a forced regen at workshop, amber light returned. Got vapouriser valve removed, and inspected. Had a lot of soot partially blocking holes. It was cleaned with solvent and blown out with air. Not as dirty as the one seen on U Tube. Checked electrics, fuse etc all OK. Put it back in,all seems OK so far, no lights car still runs great. I've read that these devices are only on Ford Diesels, and also they can be a bit problematic. Do you checking and cleaning if necessary should be included as a maintenance requirement ie every 15,000k?.

Like what they have all said. Get the code read.
If you can, have it read while the light is still on (don't turn car off) as a lot of codes will disappear on restart
