Default Ford Telstar TX5 No Start Problem???

Got a TX5 thats a friends and its been sitting in shed for years not running.

Just went and got a half decent second hand battery (tested 12.5V) from wreckers.

Chucked battery in and even put my car on with jumper leads to charge it up a bit.

All lights coming on but no cranking just relay switching under dash.

Could it be starter relay at back of bay?

The stupid relay cover does'nt say with relay is the starter relay and i don't have a manual.

Tried turning the engine over by hand? if it's manual, rock it in gear, if it's auto use a socket & breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt. After sitting that long it could well be frozen, and need to break free.

Hey Commonutt i'll try that tmrw you might be right?

I keep telling everyone that has stored cars and bikes that they gotta be run every month or so to keep everything moving and batteries charged and also use fuel stabiliser to stop the **** fuel we get these days from going stale as it does.

Thanks for the tip mate!

Next in line will be the handbrake not releasing from being applied when it was parked.

Then there's the rust on the rotors that will make it hard to move until the pads "grind" it away for clearance.

Fun & games getting stored cars running again.

Ye it was fricken hard to push around this morning but as you say the pads have free'd up and the handbrake has realeased perfectly.

Hoping to get it running asap.

Bought some stock wheels today from wreckers so the big 18's and new tyres all brand new will be sold and ripped out the big Boss Amp and Sony Xplod sub woofer and cables.

All that stuff will be sold on Flea Bay.

Apparently the TX5 was rebuilt not too long ago.....Wonder what its worth if its up and running???

All the panels are straight as a dye just the front bumper and r/h headlight are damaged???

Its actually got a 'TX5club.com' sticker on the l/h side window of it lol.

They were bloody Mazda's wer'nt they???

Which engine is in this Telstar and what year model.
Is it the earlier 2.2L ... or the later 2L 4-cyl or the 2.5L V6?????

The clicking sound is similar to what happened to my Mum's KF Laser years ago ... it ended up being a stuffed ignition module on the dizzy. It just wouldn't let it turn over. Just clicking.

Unsure if the 4-cyl versions used a similar setup to the 1.8L engines in the Lasers.

Asked him to send it asap!

It the 2.2ltr engine 10/88 model, Grey with Red trim around it like an EF XR.

I'd say it is one of these bad boys

The 2-tone turbo's weren't bad in that area as well.

Yep exactly the same except and has some side skirts fitted too.

Whats it going to be worth if we get it running?

Apparently the young kid that owned it had the engine rebuilt, if i can sell it with' 'rebuilt engine' we can get more for it.

All the panels are dead straight just r/h headlight smashed and front bumper damaged and the front of bonnet too.

Has sports seats fitted in the front so can sell them.

If it has been sitting for years, there is a good chance that the petrol has turned to glue, and you will need a good clean from the fuel cap to the injectors.

Try running a wire direct from the battery to the solenoid wire on the starter. If it is an auto is the neutral start switch working, try running the shifter from park back to low a few times. No use looking for ign or fuel problems until you get the starter motor working.

Tried again today and all the Park, Neutral and Drive lights are coming up on dash so the the swicthes are all good.

Willl definately try direct cranking the starter motor using jumper cables next weekend
but really if thers no voltage at the starter solenoid then thers something missing in between the ignition and the starter solenoid.

Thats why i think its the starter relay???

While i was at the wreckers on saturday arvo a local Mobile Auto Elec ute was parked in the car park.

I put his number in my phone asap!

I ran into him in the wreckers and i asked him wot might be wrong.

I told him i tried to hotwire it by cutting all the wires off the back of the ignition switch but it was'nt doing anything

He said to go back to the only Telstar they had in the wreckers and take the switch out of the barrell which i did as i always carry basic tools with me.

Went back to shed and put new switch in and it just turns with a flat blade screwdriver.

All lights on but no cranking. Gotta jumper starter motor and make that cranks on friday morning.

If i cant get it going on friday morning i'll be getting the Auto Elec to come up to the shed and hopefully sort out the problem asap.

He charges $120 per hour so i hope its not too hard???

Its gotta be worth more running than not?

Back on the tx5 this morning.

Bloody starter motor is in a horrible spot under inlet manifold.

Managed to short pos and neg terminals with a short screwdriver and the starter turned but the gear did'nt engage on the flywheel.

Do these starters have some sort of clutch on them that fails???

The manual i bought off ebay has'nt arrived yet either.

O.k i fitted a Jumper wire from the starter solenoid signal wire and connected it to battery pos terminal.

She's cranking fine so i took a plug out and its got spark too.

Put intake piping on connected wire connection to wotever the sensor is on the big silver box.

Took fuel line off fuel filter in the r/h corner and have absolutely NO fuel even after putting 10 litres into tank.

Fuel gauge is showing 1/4 tank.

Faulty fuel pump maybe now???

Will try and find fuel pump and get it running with jumper wires maybe?

Found the fuel pump under the back l/h seat.

Went and bought some alligator clips and red/black wire and very small female spade terminals to try and get fuel pump at running and pumping fuel up to the filter.

Connected pos and neg clips to battery and then to red and black wires on fuel pump but got nothing.

Gave up after that!

Will try again next saturday when i'll have the manual.

And i also think theres an immobiliser under the dash but i did'nt get a chance to have a look.

Gotta wait another week.

If the fuel is more than a couple of years old, then you'll need to either drain it & fill it with fresh fuel, or at least dilute it by 50% with some decent non-ethanol 95 (ie if there's 20L in the tank, put 20L of fresh 95 into it).

You should be able to get the fuel pump running manually to pump out the old fuel (remove the line from the fuel rail & jam it into a larger hose, that can run down to a jerry can, 20L drum, or other decent size fuel-compatible container.

When cranking, you've got spark - that's good - most immobilisers kill either spark or fuel. You may need to "hotwire" the pump like you did & try it again.

However, if the immobiliser was fitted by a clever person, they may be killing the injectors - either by working off the injector relay, or through the computer output (+ side is via a relay, and on at all times, and the negative side is triggered by the computer). Simple test is to grab an injector between your finger & thumb, and feel if it's clicking. If not, then check for 12V+ in the terminals with the ignition on - at least one of them should be 12V+ - and often it's a red wire.
