Looking for a strategy game for my new laptop I picked up the other day.
Specs are: core 2 duo 2.0 4gb ram 1gb graphics card I used to be right into PC games but have dropped off lately. I have C&C Generals which I have exhausted, Civ4. I see Diablo3 is still in the works, love Diablo2, but yeah, whats the best of the current crop? Cheers

C & C 3 plus expansions, World in conflict are a couple i have. World in conflict is worth it just for visuals alone.

once you've gotten pass leveling in World of Warcraft it's actually a pretty casual game these days. But as I said leveling is still time consuming.
Of course just leveling in itself can be a lot of fun. |

What kind of game are you looking at? First person shooter, strategy, RPG etc etc?
Star Craft II is coming out soon if your into that. the FEAR series is an awesome FPS with a pretty good story line and some really freaky parts (best played at 2am with the lights turned off, volume up on a stormy night - makes ya jump out of your skin!) COD4 and COD - World at War are both great games

Agreed totally on COD 4 & 5. COD 6: Modern Warefare 2 comes out pretty soon as well. For strategy games, Starcraft 2 is coming out soon as well. If you're into driving games, Race Driver GRID is fantastic. The visuals are incredible! Also any of the Halflife series are good fun.

If you want driving games the best sim is rFactor. Its not sold at a retail store on a disc, its downloaded from their site, and payed for by credit card (around $50) and the game is based around a community mod site, basically fans of the game make all the cars, tracks and mods for it. The good thing is all the downloads are free and theres a couple of a Aussie mod groups who have already made 'V8 Factor' (the v8 supercars) and 'Touring Car Legends' (1984-1990) group A touring cars and "Bathurst Legends" which is going to be an ongoing mod series of classic bathurst years. they have released Bathurst '69 has all the XW GTHO's and Monaros, and released Bathurst '70 with the Phase 2's..theyre now workin on Bathurst '71 & '72 with the phase 3's, toranas, and chargers. You can also get all the Australian racing circuits aswell. The graphics are the best ive ever seen in any racing game.. _2:

And LOL at the Monkey Island suggestion. Never have better adventure games been made. Played each and every one of them a million times each. Bring on part three of Tales!!!

I agree with rFactor, awesome game, but if you want a little more action, go for grid. Fantastic gameplay, and replays look real!
Crysis warhead is a great first person shooter, although seemed a little short for me.

An alternative to WoW is EverQuest II, which I have played since 2004.
WoW is basically Fisher Price - my first MMO. EQII has a more mature player-base, but is really the European and US market...so not many Aussies. Otherwise, I play Fallout III, though not as good as the original two. GTA IV is another good game. Some people find it unstable, but I've generally found it okay (it was a very poor conversion from console to PC, but it does the job). Although a bit old, both Morrowind (a TRUE RPG) and Oblivion (bastardised RPG) are still games worth playing - forget about their age...classics, especially Morrowind.

Give Armed Assault 2 (Arma2) a go...it makes the COD series look like childsplay!

CS 1.6 FTW!
I have a big system (2 x 4870 x2, i7, 6gb ram etc.... etc... ) but I still love a good game of counterstrike. TF2, COD, sniper elite (old), L4Dead, NFS, GTA etc......all good.....

The OP left it pretty open. I'm partial to certain genres of gaming. For me, I favour COD4/COD5 for my FPS, Black Shark for my heli simming, Falcon4/LockOn for my fixed wing simming, rFactor/RACE07/GTR Evo for my racing, Empire Total War for my strategy, X3 series for space and could recommend another 100 games if you told me what you actually like to play. |

What frustrates me is that GTAIV has an expansion or two, but they are only for XBox 360. That sucks...stupid greedy companies.
I want my GTA IV on PC!

Yeah if your looking for a strategy game definitely have a look into the starcraft games. Starcraft 1 is still a good thing to play if you haven't before, even though it's old now days (it's pretty cheap as well)... I think they delayed starcraft 2 till next year.
Supreme Commander is another one you could have a look at, it got good reviews and it's reasonably modern.. I think there is a demo of that 1 as well. If your steering away from strategy definitely look into games like Crysis (it's a first person shooter), it's really good but make sure your laptop will run it before you buy it as it's pretty hard to run (there is a demo of it).. Call of duty 4 is another good fps, Team Fortress 2 is one that's less serious but great fun. If your looking for value for money, you can pick up something called the orange box which has a bunch of games which mostly got above 9.5 in reviews, it's the best value I've seen! (Half life 2, half life 2 episode 1, half life 2 episode 2, team fortress 2, portal) (each of the half life's are full games, with at least 12-15 hours of gameplay, team fortress 2 is an online shooter, portal is a fun puzzle type shooter) Battlefield Hero's is a free online shooting game. It's actually a good, fun game for one that's free. Saw some people say world of warcraft earlier.. I can't deny that it's fun.. but be careful as it's very addictive, and if you play it over a long period of time, the price starts to add up.

Postal - any game where you can chop someones head off with a shovel and kick it for the dog to go and get so he likes you is "ok" by me. Not really that new though.

The original postal was top-down, and I actually preferred it. But Postal II was just manic. You can urinate on people too...I did wee on the cop, and he wasn't impressed. Also tazer people... An okay game but one that I personally get bored of quickly... All this talk of Starcraft and such....go and play Dune II. My 2nd favourite game of all time.
