Short Shifting

Has anyone ever 'short shifted' the manual transmission on a AU. The one in my ute is too long and I am looking at alternatives.

Can anybody help?

Yep!

The first change I made was a shorter shaft courtesy of BPT (site sponsor). That was later coupled with a billet short shifter from Herrod Motorsport (also a site sponsor) which combined gives me a nice quick throw, and for 2nd-3rd shifts, a lot more confidence that I won't miss (don't think I have since it was installed actually...)

Rip Shifter, Hurst shifter or SVO shifter....

They pop up on ebay every now and then.

Have you tried the old 'chop and rethread' solution. Take out the stick, take some off, and rethread the stick and put back in.

Do you think that would work (I'm a bit of a tight ****, but good in the workshop!)

I saw this one a while ago and wasn't sure if it would do anything? Do you have one in your car Ben? Is it worth while getting that with out one of those rip shifters? They just seem way too expensive for just giving a shorter change.

Nope don't have one and not in a rush to get one or a rip shift either. Got no problems quick shifting with the stock stuff, and just got to be a bit mindful of the 2-3 shift.
Might get one eventually

I wouldnt recommend chopping and shorting that way, did it in a mates falcon, and it didnt really work lol, felt weird and sloppy aftwards.
It wont feel anything like a proper shifter.

Why would shortening the shaft make it sloppy?

When you changed it didnt feel like it was piviting at the base like it normally does.. it felt like the shaft stayed 100% vertical and moved at the base..
If you get what I mean?
It actually felt like shortening made it a longer throw in a way..

The idea of a short shifter is to decrease the amount of throw required in between gears by changing the angle the shifter travels, also means your hand doesn't move as far. Cutting and rethreading your stock one can be likened to cutting springs to lower a car - you enhance visual appearance but get no performance upgrade, sometimes the opposite. That sloppy feel feel is because when the stock shifter is cut it still has the same pivot point, a short shifter unit has all this designed to suit the new shorter shaft, shorter throw and different angle.

Could be, are they really worth it though? I have never driven a manual Falcon before, but am doing the conversion to mine.

i have a billet alloy (i think thats the name) short shifter in mine .it has shortend the shift alright ,by nearly half i reckon .but 2nd to 3rd is still a bit of a hit and miss affair. when driving through the twisty bits going from3rd back to 2nd is like going from 2nd to 3rd on the up shift but worse.1st to 2nd ureal,3rd to 4h even better.

i've been playing around with the idea of shortening the shifter by cutting and rethreading it .when i get round to it i'l post how it goes .

Shortened the stick on mine and it has made a shorter throw again, sounds like you are grabbing the shifter and pushing it across into third from second, I find it easier to user your palm and slide it up into 3rd. You may also need to adjust the positive stops. I have the same shifter as you do with no problems.

your right i do grab it and push it across into 3rd.i think i'l have try your style out.
i have noticed with mine that the nuetral to 2nd throw is shorter than the nuetral to 3rd throw .looks like i may have to to ajust the stops.
should the throw from N to 2nd be the same as from N to 3rd ?

I have a Mal Wood short shifter, is nothing short of brilliant. Nice positive changes and have only missed 3rd once in the last 12mnths. It would have to be on top of any mod list I would do on future cars.

Any idea when the next group buy will happen! Definitley want one! Have changed from 2nd back to 1st when trying for third a few times when flooring it and it is not a good sound!!!

Grab one of the short shifters off ebay for $50. i know 2 people that installed this, and both love it. It's not the same as the Herrods/BPT sure shifter, but it's 1/8th the price, and is an effective mod on it's own as it shortens the throw for each gear, thereby making gear changes more precise in the first place. The sure-shift pretty much only helps with the 2-3 gate, but if you can't get that right anyway, you should be driving an auto.

Its not a matter of not being able to get it right! Its a matter of when your at red line you want to be sure of the change and you want it to be quick! Many manual owners would probably agree that it can be easy to miss 3rd or not be able to get it in properly when changing quick!
