Hey guys, those who know my history a bit will now I have been talking about buying an Escort for ages. And if I could find someone who would swap for my EL Ghia for their RS2000 then I would in a heart beat.
But the real reason I want an Escort is for racing. So just a quick question, who here races theirs? And is it a genuine RS2000 or similar. Im having trouble deciding whether its worth spending the extra and getting an RS, or I just get a normal GL or something and modify that. Also god forbid, if I was to have an off and cause some damage, RS parts are going to be harder and more $$$ to find as time goes on. I would be racing in events such as sprints, hill climbs and circuit stuff (targa tassie is a dream too). Also, does a coupe offer any benefits over a sedan from a racing point of view? Is it a little stronger? Handle a little better? My goal is to have the car (or a good shell) by the end of the year. Cant wait!

Don't race mine, would consider it (rally) if I had another car and money. Not a RS2000.
Be sure to document the progress for us, sounds like a fun thing to follow. |

I have a Genuine RS2000 2 dr (auto) club car,Full cage,race seats,harness,no carpet,alloy door trims,big brakes,semi slicks,firm track suspension but from the out side still looks like its road going,I built it up to hill climb,supersprints and use for track days,I did one event and now want more power so at this stage,Im building an injected turbo 2ltr for it,and whilst the engine is out,Its getting resprayed under the bonnet.But Im thinking I want it more original,so the carpets going back in,I bought some RS scheel seats to go back in it,and May even fit the standard console back in it.
Its an original auto so its a bit rare these days,and Im abit attached to it,so if another escort 4 door comes up cheap I wouldnt mind swapping over all the track gear into it and leave it for road duties only ,saves me worrying to much about bending it,thats not to say ,Im scared of using it,i just want to keep it in one peice so I can drive when Im old................ Ahh yeh getting back to your question,No you wont benefit from using an RS shell/car as 2ltr escort is essentially the same diff, gearbox ratio is the same,suspension is a little firmer new but they may have sagged by now any way if any thing the nose cone makes them marginally heavier.Im considering a standard 4 door as there are more around now and are cheaper,just get a factory 2ltr auto if you can, the tunnel is easier to work under.then go from there,they are a good handling well balanced budget track car,the skys the limit when it comes to performance parts for them.

Sounds good. I dont think I could bear to cut and and mod an original RS. And those nose cones aint cheap to replace.
So no advantage with a coupe? Is it just looks?

I'm preparing to race my RS2000 in club level sprints later this year. Its a four door so its just a temperary racer until I finish my dedicated track car - a V8 cologne kit Capri.
The advantage of a 2dr is the abillity to fit rear arches (not available for four doors). Coupes are light as well, but thats not the main reason people prefer 2drs....They just look better. |

i am doing up a mk1 4 door as a track car, we were originally going to take it to the tip but we thought what the hell, it wont matter if it has a big crash because its only a 4 door, mk2 two doors are starting to get rarer so if you are after one get it now.
race cars are big money, dont spend it all at once. |
