Default Double DIN

Just for something different my standard double din in dash stacker has swallowed my CDs & died so rather then waste my money on a replacement stocker that will only break again I figured I may as well go aftermarket.

I detest the look of 90% of headunits with tiny buttons & gaudy flashing lights so was thinking a nice double DIN touch screen one might be the go as they look more integrated kind of like the BAF ones.

I was shopping around & several stores were only to happy to sell me one & bung it in but one store I spoke to said they wont fit a double din headunit into an AU2 as the series 2 has a brace that runs behind the stereo they refuse to cut. They said the original setup is designed around this but otherwise I could only fit a single din one.

Does anyone know anything about this as I don't want to fit one if it could reduce the structural integrity of the dash as I don't want it to develop squeaks etc in the future.

i have a pioneer double din, touch screen, 6 DVD stacker in the dash and i had to do no modifications to fit it in the only problem is that there is very little in the way of mounting option in the dash

never heard of that and have seen many double DIN units fitted to AU's. The only issue you may come across is that because the centre of the dash is curved, the new HU wont be 100% in terms of the fit in the dash if you get me.

News to me. They will never be able to get it to fit 100% due to the curve in the dash but I think that's about as bad as it gets.

NeishaXR8_347 has one of the better looking double DIN installs that I've seen. Try his build thread or shoot him a PM maybe.

The prices vary a lot it's hard to pick one as they all have pros & cons. I’ve seen ones I like from under a grand to closer to 3.
I like the idea of the Pioneer one as I'd miss not having an indash stacker, a lot of the stores claim it's unnecessary as they all play MP3s & have USBs, aux inputs etc but I couldn’t be bothered mucking around with all that, I have the CDs I might as well play them. I’ve seen it for around $1300 which is about average you can get ones on fleabay from HK for half that but it's a bit of a risk.

Only thing with pioneer is I don't think they can control the power aerial properly. If you can live with the aerial being up while you are listening to CD's then it's not a worry.

I have the pioneer unit and swear by it, it will also play mp3s and all that so you can jam a hell of a lot of music into it over 6 disks, yes there is the aerial issue but as I seldom use the radio I just put a simple isolator switch into the aerial control wire so it stays down when I don't want it

I posted up pics of my pioneer HU a while ago in this thread the only real issue is the dash curvature which I got around by making a frame to go around the HU to blend it in, Mine is a series 1 but the dash contours in this area are much the same

They've all got there ups & downs I'm still yet to find any aftermarket headunit I erally like, being Fairmont based my TE50 car has a half height button for the aerial I wonder if I could rig something up with that.

I've still got a bunch of shops to check out & ask some questions but they're all pretty painful to deal with.

Check this unit out, for something simialr in the shops you're looking at $3800. If I had the cash I would take it, just need to check that its pal compatible and region free or region 4 compatible.

Yes I saw that but I have no plans to take my car to the US, Canada, Alaska or Hawaii anytime soon so it's as good as useless to me.

Alpine make a nice looking double DIN CD unit for $649, its at the cheaper end of the scale but I personally dont mind the look of it. It isnt a touch screen etc tho.

Any Pioneer info you need let me know as we have a full tech manual at work.

Cool will call you as soon as I get a chance over the next couple of days Stav I have a couple of ideas to update the rest of my system while I'm at it.

I found this pic posted elsewhere in the forums I think that's the bar the bloke must of been talking about dunno what it does tho.

I'm still tossing up on the screen idea Alpine sell a couple of single DIN ones that don't look too bad.
I'm also trying to make up my mind on this double DIN one I can't decide if it would look neat or poxy. Anyone have any input?

Pulling it apart so I can get my CDs out. I haven't made my mind up what I'll do if I can do that without destroying it, I'll try not to but I make no guarantees I'm not always the most patient person. :

That's what I'm trying to get away from & after spending days trawling the net & car audio stores I can assure you 99% of whats out there is aimed at the fully sick crowd.

I want something something that people don't really notice like the stocker, neat with no flashing lights stupid displays or tiny messy buttons.

I keep changing my mind if that one is nice simple & understated or over the top & stupid.

LOL, they are more a pain in the ar5e when they are playing up installed, then when you get them out to take out your stuck cd's.

Be gentle with it, or you can always send it to me, ill get your CD's out and post them back to you unscratched!!

i have installed a touch screen in my au3 xr not to long ago. ITs double din and the only buttons on the unit are tiny little ones along the bottom it sits flush and you can adjust the screen so it can tilt out and up when you turn it on to make it easier to see and when turned of sits flush again. it has dvd and sat nav and is able to put tv on it as well. was just under 1000 installed i think its a toshiba not 100% sure though

Hey, do you use the satnav?

I originally planned for a double din dvd mainly for satnav - I'm really not likely to be watching dvds in the car.

However, I don't want to sacrifice sound quality (which means a more expensive dvd unit) and I wonder whether the positioning is good for satnav?

I recently returned from a trip away and bought a Navman for the trip. I had the Navman positioned on the windscreen but as close to the dash as poss on the drivers side bottom right corner.

That seemed a good position for using it whilst driving.

I'm wondering if in the middle, well below dash level is not somewhat of a distraction while driving?

Mine is just a plane black screen to look at it, it just has the few little buttons so it looks really good in the dash if you didnt know what you were looking at it could nearly pass as stock

And as for the sat nav the screen car tilt richt out up to about a 60 degree angle upwards so it is really easy to see. I use it a bit but it wasnt standard with the screen you just have to get the module that plugs into the back i cant remember how much it was dont think it was to much though. The ones on the dash are a bit easyer to drive with though. I have a rather decked out stereo and was more of an upgade to the sound quality than a problem. I bought it from gold coast car sound but if you dont live in south east queensland i dont know who else sells them. i havnt seen them anywere else

I have had two Double Din units installed in the XR

First was a Pioneer FH-5000MP. Looked alright had all the moving bits, lots of different pretty colours, but didn't match the shape of the car. Set me back $899

That got nicked...

Now I have a Kenwood DPX-MP2100. Double DIN, Black and Chrome (sexy), Bluetooth, AUX IN, CD/CD-RW MP3/WMA/AAC and a decent remote all for $350

The Kenwood wins hands down for clarity too. If you were in WA I'd do the install for a few beers !!!!

I will get pics up of both decks installed shortly

ive been doing a bit of reading on Car Audio Autralia forums, the guys seem to know a little bit about whats going on.

Apparetnly a 2 din unit, im talking just a normal unit no touch screen or anything loses features compared to a single din unit. eg one of the double din alpine units only has 1 set of RCA pre-outs which will limit the avaliability to control sub levels, fading etc.

if ur not worried about subs, and amps and stuff then i wouldnt worry about it, maybe jut something to consider?
