Summary:
ODI IS AWARE OF ALLEGED SUBJECT VEHICLE FIRE-EVENTS APPARENTLY DUE TO A MELTED OIL LEVEL SIGHT “GLASS” DURING PERIODS OF EXTENDED ENGINE IDLING. OIL DRAINS FROM THE ENGINE CRANKCASE, THROUGH THE MELTED SIGHT GLASS. IT THEN COATS THE EXHAUST SYSTEM (INCLUDING THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER) AND IGNITES. THIS SCENERIO IS ALSO DESCRIBED IN A (CONFIDENTIAL) NUMBER OF FIELD REPORTS PROVIDED TO NHTSA BY BMW PURSUANT TO THE EWR REQUIREMENTS. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THESE ALLEGATIONS WE HAVE OPENED THIS PE.

Don't know if this applies to Aus BMW bikes, but any FF who own Bimmers, check with your Bimmer service dept...

Ouch! goes to show even some of the fancier gear in general do have faults. I hope its not another case of the ford exploder and no one was injured

Im glad they put a decent sight glass in my 1987 Yamaha XT 250, or I would be stuffed by now, so much for BMW quality, hey?

Thats the first recall I have ever heard on BMW motor cycles. I have just ordered a F800ST. I hope that there are no burning bike syndromes with that!!!
