Default Enrol to vote

This is not a political message but a heads up to the younger people on this site, which there are a fair few.

As the election has been called today if you are over 17 you need to enrol to vote. You have until 8pm on Wednesday 17 October to get your enrolment form in. There are penalties in the way of fines if you do not enrol.

The enrolment form can be found on the AEC site

The choice is yours.

This message is NOT brought to you by the Australia Government.

I don't think there is any fine for not enroling. However if you are not enroled it is unlawfull not to be present at a polling booth on the day of the election/absentee vote.

At school we were told that there were fines for not enrolling. After we were old enough to vote and did enrol, we were informed that penalties only apply when you are enrolled and fail to vote.

It was at Tech. Just after I started my traineeship. I was a little peeved when I found out. I would have enrolled, just don't like being fed stories

I don't think there are any fines if you do not enrol. However, it is supposed to be YOUR government and they are supposed to be working for YOUR best interests. So by not enrolling and voting you're just taking your own voice away.

Remember, the best way to voice your approval/disapproval for the current government is to vote for/against them. Not voting does nothing.

Exactly!! And anyone that does not vote has no right to complain about anything the current government (who ever they are) does!!

My 2 cents.... It is not law to enrol, you enrol of your own free will. It is however, illegal not to vote once you are enrolled. Work that out. I still believe this situation to be unconstitutional, or at least very unfair.

There is only one way to remove your name from Electoral roll if you remain here in Oz. Death.

So basically, if you never enrol, you never have to vote. If you do enrol, you will always have to vote.

Freedom of choice is only partially utilised in this scenario.

People were never unenroled 20 years ago . i cant believe people dont want to be apart of who runs us .
sounds like we are becoming the 51st US state . about 20 % of people dont vote there . /or proabably dont know the name of thier own president . but stand by there country as the only one in the world . this is what capatalism does to people .

australians neeed to be counted . so i hope anyone not enroled rweading this , goes and enroles and votes . so that whoever gets in govt . gets there by all australians over 18.

In all honesty, If you prefer not to vote, as mentioned before, you only need to show up at the polling booth and have your name checked off. You can then refuse to take the ballot paper by simply stating your a jehovas witness and do not belive in voting.

I would prefer everyone that does not want to vote did that.....that way the informal donkey votes that have been drawn on don't get counted toward the party that is already in power. It would make life a lot easier and fairer for those that do want a democratic outcome!!!!

Most of the people here or anywhere for that matter that can't be bothered would be up in arms if they had the vote taken away.

Seriously it is a right to vote, to express which preference to who you want to run the country. If you dont like none of the candidates in your electorate, you can always run as an independant. Even if you don't win your preferences will make a difference to who gets elected.

Especially all the people before us fought for the vote. All the blacks, women and every singled out citizen due to race and gender who was denied the vote and yet fought hard to secure a true democracy where everyone has their say. You don't have to even vote properly, you can just write Vote 1 for Glenn McGrath (a mate does this every election) and be done.

Cop the fine sweet if you choose its your duty to be arrogant enough to be lazy as the candidates aren't worth it, Just dont complain why we have an Idiot running the country and why no-one didn't vote for the other party.

Just look at the US, Only the loyalists, hardcore political activists and general fanatics that are relying on outcomes for economic gains or relations for trade are the ones that choose who runs the country. And look who they got stuck with, even though the polls shows that the majority don't want him there and question the way he runs the country. But no one can be half assed voting.

You place an Absentee vote at the ballot point nearest your location on the day of the election. Or a postal vote, which you need to contact the Electoral Office about.

And you hadn't moved? Gotta love a beaurocracy. I have voted interstate on absentee status. Never an issue.

So everyone is saying that it's not compulsory to enrol to vote? That probably explains why I haven't been fined yet.

so i gahter a few here think it doesnt matter if they enrol to vote or not .
what you're all saying with your choice not to vote . is
it doesnt matter how many hours i work. how much i get paid, when i retire, what tax i pay, how many schools there are, weather immigrants come here or not . wether they get fairness when or if they come here . if the hospital is too small for the area you live in . wether we go and bomb another country or not, if we have defence or not . wether we pay for the air we breath or not . or anything else you caN THINK OF WHICH OUR GOVERNMENT CONTROLS . none of that matters . just let it all happen .
in that case , why even have opposing governments . hey it doesn't matter right???
the sky aint gunna fall in, (well at least mum and dads spare room that i live in) , and the odds are i wont have a wife , kids mortgage, bills education, health and defence to worry about then cause lifes good . mum and dad made it so with their feet, when they vote.
