my 98 au has a rude noise coming from the engine. i thought it was one
of the pullies making this noise so i removed the flat belt. no noise. all the idle pullies around the tensioner seem ok. the water pump pully does not spin that well so i think its the problem. can i just change the pully with out pulling the pump out. thanks |

100% on the tensioner pulleys?
My car started sounding like it had a supercharger. It was a cactus tension pulley (The plastic one). Would be surpried at a water pump pulley though. Can anyone answer his question?

the tensioner is the main candidate you can get the bearings cheap enough and they are a weak point. take the belt off and try spinning the different pullys by hand just to be sure at this low speed it may show nothing but worth a try.

So when you removed the (flat?) belt, you ran the engine and the noise was gone? You said the water pump pulley was hard to turn? It could be the water pump bearing it self starting to sieze. I would checked the idler and tentioner pullies just to make sure 100% that they are still good.

i just rechecked the pullies the tensioner pullies seem ok. they spin freely and have very little play(is that axil play) i really hope it is the tensioner pullies. the water pump
flang look like a to clean up for the new gasket. |
