coke and science - why?

kinda weird, but here goes.

the background:
i had some drinks sitting out in the fridge in the shed. the fridge is known to freeze things if you put anything right up the back.
so i managed to freeze 2 x 2lts coke and a couple of stubbies (didnt explode).
moved the cokes to the door for a couple of days but they were still pretty much frozen so i took them out and left them over night.
put them back in the fridge the next day (in the door) and theyve been there happily staying chilled.

the weird part:
a few days ago, i bought one of the previously frozen bottles inside and put it in the fridge. the fridge is pretty new and hasnt made ANYTHING freeze at all, in any way shape or form (there is no freezer section anyway - its just a fridge).
put this bottle in the door and a few hours later, its half frozen.
im sure it was liquid when i put it there so i kinda brushed it off as maybe it was half frozen?

anyway, today i did the same thing. took the other previously frozen bottle, checked it, made sure it was all liquid and no ice and put it in the house fridge. and ill be stuffed, its half frozen after 2 hours.
there was a 3rd bottle of coke that didnt get frozen in the shed fridge and that didnt turn frozen when i bought it inside either.

so, anyone into science want to try to explain why if you freeze a bottle of coke, defrost it, chill and change it to another fridge it freezes?

the shed fridge is set colder than the house fridge too.

maybe because youve frozen then unfreezed it. the substances that make up the coke have split up(some things unfreeze at different temps.and freeze at differnet temps). so when you have put it back into the fridge the substances that freeze at fridge temp have frozen and the substances that dont havnt frozen. ok it seems confusing how i explained it but when they are frozen and unfreeze one thing will become a liquid before another and seperate itself from the mixture. So when you put it back into the fridge one substance could have a higher freezing point now that its split from the other substances, and then those parts will freeze and the other wont.

Also if you left it in there did it all eventually freeze or just half of it?? I shouldve asked this first lol.

Apparently it only works on Diet Coke... Even Coke Zero wont react to mentos.

it doesnt completely freeze, just turns into a slushy. that in itself isnt a bad thing since its 44 degrees here.

im thinking ive changed the properties of something, whether it be a carbonating gas or coke ingredients i dont really know.

im wondering if you freeze and defrost the bottle enough times if you could make it freeze at some stupid temp like 20-25 degrees?

In actuality it's more to do with the pressure inside the bottle. Have you ever noticed that you can have something that isn't frozen in the fridge, but take it out, open it, and the next thing you know it freezes? Higher pressured liquids do not freeze at the same temperature. When it was originally frozen, it pushed excessive gas out, so when it is put into a warmer fridge, it will freeze at the lower temperature.

Hmmm that has actually happened to me only twice my whole life... And i'm buggered if I can replicate it if I tried.

Had a 1.25L soft drink in the freezer, took it out the next day to see it still fully liquid and not an ounce of frost.

Open her up, and within seconds clouds of ice just appear within the liquid. In a minute or 2 the whole thing has turned to a slushy.....

I've only had it happen once or twice too. It's something that would require a bit of trial and error to get right.

reread FordACE's answer. he is totally correct. what's even more interesting is that you can boil fluids by dropping the temperature, if the fluid is at a lower pressure than the atmosphere. that's why astronauts wear sealed suits.

pressure is the main factor. there is also the seeding phenomena, ie. if there is even one small crystal of frozen liquid in the vessel, you have a locus for the remainder of the liquid to freeze from, ie it will commence freezing around this particle, and continues to grow from there. but if it was COMPLETELY thawed, any pressure differential will alter the freezing point as mentioned before. this is a trick ive played a few times with beer cans in the Engel car fridge. get one to the point of freezing, with the can at highest pressure, before actually freezing or exploding, then give it to a mate, once it opens, it very shortly thereafter freezes as it equalizes atmospheric pressure. funny, but a waste of good beer that i wish i was drinking instead of procrastinating at work waiting til i was at home consuming the aforementioned liquid refreshment

I put a 600ml coke in the freezer at work, came back a few hours later and it appeared to be unfrozen. I opened it up took a swig and within seconds it had turned to slush. But before opening the bottle it appeared to be all liquid.

Ahhh the marvels of coke.

Pity that when you freeze coke in a bottle it doesn't seem to ever come out the same as a genuine Frozen Coke like the ones you get from Maccas etc.

There is probably more artificial cr@p in the maccas one than coke
