Default Aftermarket Sunroof

Has anyone ever had an aftermarket sunroof installed?

If so what was the outcome, was it up to standard or did it create problems such as air or water leaks down the track?

Look forward to some info, thanks.

My '76 had an old one and while driving down a 100km back road in Lara it flew off and smashed into a zillion fragments.

I bought one from eBay, fited it myself and it's been fine, no leaks like the old one.

My old AU had a Tickford sunroof, which are fitted like any other aftermarket sunroof. No dramas with that one either.

I always thought that the "Hollandia" roofs fitted from prestige sunroofs were pretty good but there seems to be alot of people saying that there nothing but problems, rusting around roof, air & water leaks, saggy roof lining etc.

Are these particular "nightmare" roofs done else where on the cheap or is it all aftermarket sunroofs that give you problems?

I've got a factory roof in my Honda & I've never had any issues with that.

Very curious, hmmmmm used:

Good to hear. I'm thinking alot of people that say the aftermarket roof installs are nothing but problems are actually coming from people that have never had one installed or even no anyone that has had one installed.

Just one of those myths :

18 months ago we had a Hollandia 400 fitted to our EL Ghia. It is the biggest hole in the roof you can get other than privately importing from the States from companies like Streetbeat. Its a sliding folding "vinyl" sunroof which actually has a very tough black matt finish rubber outer, a light grey interior lining, is electrically operated with two memory stops and despite what you might think looking at it, has not leaked a drop despite torrential rain and driving cross winds and being in a car wash regularly. The only thing I have to be aware of is not pointing a high pressure cleaning gun at the leading edges of the sunroof.

The only drama we had with ours was the guy didn't put it exactly where we wanted. We said "as far forward as possible" He put it so the control panel was hard against the sunvisors when up. We will one day remedy that when we find a metal craftsman who uses a Henrob torch instead of a MIG for bodymods.

Make sure you draw with pencil on the roof and leave no doubt where you want the cut. It is an expensive fix if the installer gets it wrong :

Other than that tho, our sunroof experience has been the best.

Cheers

The Tickford sunroofs were the Hollandia brand, didn't have a single problem with mine, though it had done less than 100,000Ks and was always garaged when I sold it.

I would have thought it would be down to the quality of the install itself if you picked a solid brand like Hollandia.

You'll find most dealer optioned sunroofs are aftermarket, there are certain places in each state that fit these sunroofs. If you can find out which ones the dealers use that would be best, they usually come with warranty aswell.

Prestige sunroofs are the ones that "trained" the FPV installers to do the job at FPV HQ for the B series cars........Ford and FPV vehicles.

The main issue with dodgy sunroofs is the initial quality of the unit and the way it is fitted..........if both aspects of this are second rate then ther WILL be problems. HOLLANDIA roofs are generally regarded as the best and PRESTIGE do an OK job of fitting them......so if you go there, chances are you'll be OK..........

I had sunroof fitted to my new FG GT by Prestige at Burwood.

The sunroof in my BF GT was fitted by FPV (Ford option). Wind noise problems were fixed by Prestige (they do warranty work). New (FG) roof is totally noise free, a much better job. Will never have a factory fitted roof again - production line mentality .vs. experts?

I visited Prestige earlier and was shown a FG (and others) being done. Answered all my questions and gave good information. Booked in, completed and had a good tint job done at the same time

I put in my own pop up sunroof into my EL.
I pressure wash my car and it never leaks.
I used good windscreen sealer top and bottom so it was a good water / air tight fit .

As funny as the sticker is, the questions from potential buyers are hilarious:

"So what type of motor does it take and how do i go by wiring it all up and locating the switch??"

"Will I have to declare the addition of this modification to my insurance company and will it compromise the structural integrity of my car?"

"Will this work with my convertible?"

"How much horsepower does this add?"

Answers to Customer Questions

They are Solar Powered and Automatic, No Wires or Buttons to worry about.

Due to the added Value this will add to your Vehicle it is advisable to let your Insurance Company know and it will make your Roof Twice as strong as Factory spec.

You won't need a poxy Convertible once you fit one of these beauties

One of these Sunroofs will add 50rwkw but if you fit 2 it will add 175rwkw, we recomend you paint your disc Calipers red and paint Brembro on them to handle the instand boost in power

I have a aftermarket (I assume) Sekruit Sunroof in my El, it doesn't leak and doesn;t emit too much wind noise, very factory look aswell...

Call them. If you are in the area, go in and see them (they can show you what they do and answer all your questions). Rapt with mine, and the treatment I got.
