Default Pre July 1st 07 P platers can drive BA GT

Drivers who were issued a probationary licence prior to 1 July 2007 may drive a vehicle if it is not a high powered vehicle as defined by both definitions. If a vehicle is defined as high powered under one definition but not the other, it may be driven.

Definition of a high powered vehicle (prior to 1 July 2007)

a power to mass ratio which exceeds 125 kilowatts per tonne; or
an engine capacity which exceeds 3.5 litres per tonne of the unladen mass (tare) of the motor vehicle

As stated above power to mass ratio does exceed: 162 kw per tonne or
290/1790 x 1000 = 162 kw per tonne

Calculating the capacity to weight ratio

Capacity to weight ratio is the capacity in litres divided by the weight in tonnes

Therefore 5.4 litre engine divided by 1790kg or 5.4/1.79 = 3.01 per tonne, well under the regulations.

I phoned Vicroads and they confirmed this if thats how it works out!
XR8 and GT roll on or are my calculations wrong??

It's either/or. So no, you can't drive a GT.

Vicroads told me you can't drive V8's regardless.

This applies for EVERY P PLATER regardless of when they got their license.

Well Vicroads dont know what they're on about. As said above before the no tubo/v8 rule which was the OP is talking about P platers in Vic could drive 5 litres. I know a few guys and girls that were doing this.

??????????????????????????

Well if there was no V8 ban then why wouldn't they be allowed to drive 5 litres????

Vicroads told me it applies to every P plater (As I said above) even people who got their license before the laws were introduced. People could/can apply for an exemption (but that's not everyone before July 07).

I just Read above: I don't know what's going on here, I was informed from Vicroads but so were others I know, same story. From what you said that link must be 100% correct. Think their customer services needs a punch in the face.

Yep, it's worrying when you rely on these people to tell you the law (they dont need to know it off their heads but they should have something that will inform them) so you dont put yourself in trouble.

But I do know before the no v8/turbo rule P platers could and still can drive V8's as long as they are below the power to weight stated.

That is quite true. The Lexus SC300/Toyota Soarer V8 models were P plate legal, just.

Something's amiss in the law above.

I'd be ignoring the high powered under one definition but not the other... to me it's referring to something other than the clause you've quoted that follows as it distinctly uses the word 'or'. It fails the 125kw/tonne so therefore it's considered a high powered vehicle.

As far as I knew (I have a 20yr old and an 18yr old)... All that power/capacity to weight stuff was hit on the head even BEFORE the July 1st rules and replaced with NO Turbos NO V8s, period..

I've heard of cases if you can prove you need the vehicle for work. You can bypass the law.

I heard of it being done with a p-plater who owned a V8 Holden ute...

Easier to get an exemption in QLD as they aren't as strict on the restrictions, for us is just no V8 and above S/C or Turbo unless its a diesel..

Other states have the power to weight as well as the no v8s turbos etc, so im guessing it'd be alot harder to get an exemption in Vic for example..

....and some people wonder why young kids die???? :togo:

I don't care how good of a driver or how much money you have, a p plater shouldn't drive high performance vehicles... power to weight, litre's or whatever! Regulations or no regulations!!!

I've got off easy... I have all my limbs! Lost a few cars and mates tho... (I haven't injured anyone but myself)

I've been to 3 funerals, have 2 mates missing limbs, 1 with a hop for life and 2 who've killed someone... all seperate accidents too!!!

It's about being smart though isn't it.

What's the problem with a P plater who is smart about using his power?

My friends drive and I powerful cars on P's and we haven't had one crash, dint or anything..
We are all off P's and only one of us got any points, and it was no where near enough to lose our licence.

In W.A. there are no power restrictions.

These threads go down the drain so quickly, No you can't drive a BA GT...

How about we save the advice lesson guys, yes some of us have friends who have had accidents, and others the lucky ones like myself havn't, no matter what they are driving be it a Holden Barina or a FPV GT a loss of life is a massive loss for anyone to take and disablitity's to close friends and family are only one step behind.

Seems pretty straight forward, if these are the rules then in your state yes you can drive a BA GT

So it does not pass it power to weight . It does not have to pass both

Then it comes under the 5.0 capacity rule, as in, not allowed over.

Sorry but all this you can't drive this or that doesn't save lives whatsoever, If it works, where is the lower road toll? Ok so these v8's & turbo can get the inexperienced into trouble, what speeds are some popular n/a 4cyls capable of? 180-200clicks, so whats the difference? The whole problem needs to be approached a different way, there is no point continuing with restrictions that don't stop the problem

You could drive a V8 previously, but now you can't. I had a 302 XA coupe for my first car when I was 18 (back in '96) and did all the calculation crap back then lol (I was trying to get a 351).

"Drivers who were issued a probationary licence prior to 1 July 2007 may drive a vehicle if it is not a high powered vehicle as defined by both definitions. If a vehicle is defined as high powered under one definition but not the other, it may be driven."
Is that a direct quote from Vicroads or your summary? I always thought it was an "either/or" statement, not a "must comply with both" statement.

There are still some quick cars out there which are allowable.

VW R32 184kw V6, 1510kg: kw/kg = 122, L/tonne = 2.12
0-100km/h = 6.5s
however, a tad expensive for most p-platers
heaps of street cred IMO
(or for heaps less money a VW Bora V6 4motion) 150kw AWD/6sp man, <$20K

Renault Clio Sport. Try keeping up with one of these in traffic around town in a GT....I don't think so. Awesome P-Plater performance car.

Otherwise just get an XR6 like everyone else and wait until your off your Ps for a GT/XR8 etc.

I'd imagine Vicroads (and the police) are tired of hearing from young people trying to find loopholes to get cars which they shouldn't be in....
