Hey guys,
Just started to notice on my XR that when i come to a stop i get a fast vibration through the car. Similar to the strain air con has on a run down moter while stationary... The vibration gets a bit worse if i turn air con on. Also noticed if i pump the break once or twice it can increase vibration for a second. ALSO noticed now when i make sudden movements with my steering my intake makes a loud-ish "breathing in noise" and my revs jump up everytime i turn the steering wheel. Doesnt do it for the whole duration of the turn, just the initial movement Also getting some odd vibrations sometimes while tight turning at low rmp. 4 weeks ago this stuff wasnt happening! powersteering fluid levels are good by the way! Thanks guys

The steering noise when stationary is normal, they are supposed to do that as the extra load of the power steer would stall it if it didn't. I would still be getting the rack checked though as mine did that when I bought it and it turned out to be a stuffed rack, lucky I noticed it before I picked it up.
With the vibrations when slowing I would dare say it is brake shudder caused by a warped rotor. A quick skim of them should fix that.

Thanks Russ but the vibrations are definitly not from brake shudder, i mean real annoying vibrations when stationary like something in the engine bay is spinning very quickly off balance!

Well that's not good.
Look at the harmonic balancer and the engine and gearbox mounts as the most likely subjects for that. My old EL had a similar thing happen and it turned out to be the passenger side mount.

It was an actual vibration, enough to annoy you.
From the sounds of what you are saying it is only a very slight vibration correct?

Well then it may just be a case of checking the plugs and leads and giving it a service. A slight misfire could cause the troubles you are having.
Don't you just love internet diagnostics!

Hahaha...Thanks Russ for the quick replies.
In that case ill get it serviced and check it out step by step. It just hit 100,000 km's, what are the usual things to look out for at this stage? I heard O2 sensor can be an issue..

XR6_4EVA, mine does the exact same thing. Especially at night with lights on. It's so annoying.

The fact that the car vibrates more when the lights are on or air con is on could only leave me to believe one of the bits and pieces of the engine is on its way out! Im 75% its power steering related as the vibration, and odd noises occuring at the beginning of each turn, started at the same time and didnt happen previously! Can any one explain why the car makes a hissing noise from the intake for a split second when i turn the wheel? Sounds like a vacuum leak!

hey my car was doing it a few months back, i got it looked at and it cost me $100 odd to fix i had to get the IAC valve changed and T/B cleaned as well.
i think its called IAC, its the sensor thing just besided the T/B buterfly, sliver in colour, she did tell me it can be cleaned out 8/10 times with some spray and a wipe runs fine now no vibrations at the lights |

Idle air control valve (IAC) 1. On a fuel injection vehicle, a valve that allows air to bypass the throttle plate(s), increasing idle speed. The valve is operated by an electric solenoid or motor. The vehicle computer controls the amount of opening to regulate idle speed for varying conditions such as cold string and air conditioner compressor load 2. An electronically controlled device that controls idle speed on fuel injected vehicles by controlling bypass air.

i`m just thinking out side the box here, if its a momentary bit of rough idle and usual wear and tear stuff has been checked, i would also check for cracked vacuum hoses lose air intake/manifold bolts etc, its probably not these but odd things crop up occasionally and can be missed by a service.

Try page 10.1.49 - in the Technical service bulletins. Ford own word HA HA, but yes your quite correct lol. Either way you corrected a guy that really didn't need correcting ey? ISC, Idle speed controller, IAC Idle air controller, Idle air speed controller, you know if you say that enough, it doesnt make sense anymore... Nevermind i'm just confusing myself
