Default whereabouts on victoria do you camp/fish

Well with school holidays starting next week i thought i'd ask what are some good camping/ fishing spots within a couple hours drive from melbourne would prefer the campsite to have composting toilets or any toilets nearby some camping spots by the river lake or beachside would be nice just somewhere near water where i can wet a line and teach the kids how to fish

Lakes entrance is pretty good camping/fishing. Just recently went on a fishing weekend with a few mates, ended up drinking a bit more than we caught. :p

But its a 3 and a half hour drive. Good times tho..

Phillip island is pretty good too, you cant go too wrong there, can even take the kids to the go-kart track at the Phillip island GP track. The go-kart track is a scale replica of the GP track, hills and all.

depends what you want mate. Surf fishing you cant go past kilcunda, stay in phillip island or inverloch as both of them have good fishing. Inverloch has just had its pub renovated and it goes good on weekends and stays open fairly late.

Yarrawonga has some great river fishing, if you fish near some of the river openings you'll have a good chance of actually catching anything. I have a spot where I've caught something everytime. Its on the NSW side next to a caravan park (cant remember the name) theres a little river mouth and the fish circle in front of that. Lots of perch and cod.

There's a couple of great trout streams in murrindindi too and some good camping as well.

If you have a boat go to barwon heads and drive out a few k's set up a burley (I think thats how you spell it) trail throw out a couple of game reels and wait for the sharks and cuda to come in. Have had some good fun doing that.

Cant think of any others now but If I remember some I'll let you know

Mate you could consider Cape Paterson...not as crowded as Inverloch and some great swimming and surf beaches and also some goods spots to snorkle.

Inverloch is only 10 minutes away ( plus its a great drive along the cliffs ) and there are plenty of good fishing spots there.

I was over at Cape recently visiting my parents and fished the flat rocks at Inverloch at low tide ( and I do mean low ) and got 2 nice KG whiting around 40cm.

Also fish the channel at night in Inverloch and you will have a good chance of scoring a gummy shark :

Cheers

The only bad thing about fishing on xmas holidays (or any holidays for that matter) is that there are a heap of other people with the same idea and the place gets so crowded with fisho's and boat traffic the fish don't bite much. You'll still get something, but probably better to try either side of a major holiday

Good bream fishing further down at the river inlets like Marlo or Bemm River, but more driving. This side of Lakes Shallow Inlet, Port Welshpool isnt bad either

Up here around Eildon every day of the week people are fishing in the river and on the lake so it must be pretty good I imagine.

jerusalem creek (Eildon /victoria) used to be a favorite of mine year`s ago for a bit of fresh water fishing/camping, i don`t know what its like with diminished water levels, O`briens crossing /Wombat state forest was also a favourite, not alot of fish the last time i went due to drought i think but bush walking /gold panning(fly poo), many 4wd track/motor bike tracks of variouse difficulty from easey to white knuckles, toilets at the crossing ,some bbq area`s( firewood style) the road from Gisbourne is quite rough and longer allthough the scenery is great but i would come in from blackwood side much easier on the car, but would`nt consider O`briens crossing in a lowered car.

Anywhere on the Murray at Xmas is chaos, except right up in the high country near Corryong.

Any river camping spots on most rivers are packed over Xmas.

Sorry to be dampner, but we have been there done that for the last 30 years and it has got real bad in recent times.

It can be busy along the Upper Murray as well. Holidays are a terrible time to go car based camping.

When I was living in Geelong I used to love the Otways and anywhere between Lorne and Apollo Bay. Kennett River is a good spot, but unfortunately a lot of places all around there are illegal to camp.

i just had a bit of a look at the parks site it says you can`t park near the O`briens crossing camping spots , it looks like a new rule :( , also fire danger will have a bearing on the types of bbq permitted, i should have also mentioned the the lerderderg river changes water level a fair bit, allthough there are some deep holes in drought time that are very rarely mt but might require some bush walking to find them, if you are keen at fishing perhaps skip this one it might be hard work, here`s a link anyway http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/resources05/05_0366.pdf, this other link might be usefull, http://www.fishvictoria.com/pyoursay/reports.php

there r that many good places to fish in VIC but you just have to put in the hours, we go down to patterson river and fish for bream a fair bit and you can throw lures for hours and still not catch anything, although its true what they say in that it needs to be the right day to have a good session
