Default Ute resale

Recently I went down to Bris to buy some new work and toy cars thinking I would take advantage of the cheap prices.
There were squillions of BA & BA2 XT sedans with reasonably low Ks (50-100) for good prices (about $10k). I grabbed an excellent ex-fleet XT for 10.8k.
I was also looking for a ute. For the same $10k all I could find was AU and AU2 XLs with 150-200 in very average condition.
Anything BA was 15+ and XR6/T/8 was 20-30 and there were bugger all of them.

Yep the dealers really screw you both ways. They want to charge a foryune for the second hand cars ,but only give you a pitance for a trade in.

They offered me $22500 for my 05 BA MKII ute with only 42,000k's on it
and that was on a 80+k car.

I'm still in the ute needless to say

Utes always keep a higher resale value than sedans. Smaller numbers of ex fleet vehicles as well as lower overall sales numbers means there isn't the same over-supply issue the sedans have.

I've noticed the Falcon utes seem to hold more value for longer than what the sedans do. Having said that, I can't seem to even give mine away.

Yeh i thought that to, until i bought the Super Pursuit.. If i had spent the same money and bought a GT with leather, i would think the GT would be worth more then the Super Pursuit is now, but then again maybe im dreaming...

I think you will find that the base falcon utes XL / XLS (RS) and XR6 do hold a better resale pecentage over their sedan counter parts... Its the Higher end ones that seem to die!

I can vouch for that:

2004 BA XR6 Turbo ute purchased $39900 on the road with hard lid...

...sold 2006 with 35,000kms for $30000.

Cheapest car I have ever owned.

Found this when purchased my BA ute in Brisbane. For similar money in a sedan was looking at almost half the k's and full options. I was also looking for cab-chasis, for some reason in most cases I found these more expensive then utes with a tub which didn't make a lot of sense to me.

Ford stamp their own tubs whereas the cab chassis has to be purchased from a third party at a considerable cost.

When I purchased a car a while ago I was speaking to the guy and he said that cars that 'have a purpose' seem to hold there value ALOT better.

Eg. Ute's they have a purpose and people need not want them and there is only so many utes.

But if you just want a car for you and the missus and kids etc there are millions and millions of 4 door cars made by every manufactorer but how many people make utes?

Bascially supply and demand.

Small supply of utes and wagons + continuing demand = higher resale
Oversupply of sedans + normal demand = lower resale

Or am I babbling?? lol

my 04 manual xr8 ute halved in value in 2 yrs when i traded it on a territory turbo, i would have been better leasing one. the ute had dealer fit herrod accessories, and 45000ks, i got 25k as a trade.

Yeah I had a BA XR8 ute and only lost $9000 over three years in depreciation. I thought that was pretty good. Although I took almost double the hit when offloading my AU XR8 ute.

I've been looking for a good budget AU XLS for a white now and can't seem to find much. They seem to hold there price.

There's a white BA Ute on eBay for $7.9k and it has a canopy.

On sedans the depreciation in the first couple of years seems roughly on average around 15k a year while the utes are closer to 10k a year. It is diabolical no matter which way you look at it. I can't see me changing from my BF F6 any time soon. For the depreciation on an FG in the first couple of years I could probably put two engines, two gearboxes and two diffs in the BF and still be in front...
