Picked up a new rifle today

I have been waiting for my permit to acquire to come through and it did just before christmas.

The rifle is a Sako .223 with maddco heavy barrel, kainger trigger and a custom thumbhole stock. The scope is a 6.5 to 20x simmons. I guess that means there is not much Sako left

Intending to use this for military calibre shoots at the rifle range and long range bunny busting (hopefully out to 400m)

I used a austeyr F88 in the army and they were a miltarised version of the .223 round and were accurate for what they were. It was easy to hit the centre of the seen mass (a torso) at the range over 300 meters. I had a remington 788 in .222 and it was a good old thing too. This one replaces my single shot break barrel CBC .22 Hornet as a varminter as it was only good for about 160 - 180 meters. (But I could hit a coke can at 160 meters.)

Looking forward to shooting this and also joining in the .310 Cadet shoots too.

I spent about $2100, ($1600 rifle - $380 scope and $125 bipod) but building it would have cost the previous owner more. Story goes he sold it to the gun shop because police made him sell guns up. It was only on the shelf a few days when I spotted it.

Nice gun mate and it brings back good memories of us going out with the Roo shooter and using his .222 .243 22.250 and the mighty 25.06 which used to blow trees apart.

I remember watching through the scope on the 22.250 while the old boy nailed camels in the head with the 25.06......Nasty

Won't be much left of the rabbit if you hit it with that!

Lawns only get mowed on weekends, its the only drink driving I am allowed to do..... .223 is really still a baby sized round compared to the .243, 22/250 and 25.06 I think (hope) there will still be dressed out rabbits for eating at the end of the day. - If not I will stick with the .22 and the spotlight.

Selection of suitable projectiles will reduce the amount of terminal spatter.

I used to use a 243 for spot roo shooting; wise choice using the 22 for rabbits if you want anything left to eat.

Sweet rifle. .223 is one hell of an allrounder suited to most game up to big deer and pigs. Head shots on the rabbits will give you some meat. But body shots will splatter them. But depends on what projectile you use.

Nice looking shooting iron you have there mate, Sako are the pick.
Imo 5.56 is the perfect vermin round for long range rabbit and foxes.

Been years since I went shooting, should get back into it.

Last of mine were handed in before Christmas as I didnt renew ..... hadnt been out for ages so thought it was better to hand them in. Just a few oldies ex milterary stuff ..... nothing that looked as new and sleek as this one!!

Ever sprayed a fly with aerosol? Its only about that exciting, but noisier and more expensive.

I dont shoot things just for the sake of shooting it. I eat bunnies and I am happy to get rid of foxes and cats - especially when I see what they do to my chickens, or more importantly native species. Regardless of what I am shooting at, I dont think any animal should suffer if its at all possible to avoid it. Even after an animal has done $5000 damage to my car and whats left of the critter is smashed on the side of the road I would try to put it down humanely.

I do get a real buzz out of pulling off a great shot/shots/groups on the range or in the field - but not so much the killing part.

Yeah - I have been too busy with othher things and all my stuff has just been sitting there - everything from flintlock muzzle loader to shotty's - made a choice to get into the scene properly again.

im not too much of a rifle shooter myself though. but i had my new purchase modified just recently. picked up this baby for my 21st of my parents/other family members, and poured some cash into it. for IPSC Pistol Shooting.

What did it cost to kit it out like that mate, is all the gear made locally or did you import it from the states.

I thought you couldn't own pistols? Whats the laws reguarding them? P.S that looks awesome. I like 1911s hehe. Also, while i'm on the topic, whats the go on imitation firearms/replicas?

You need to be a member of a Certified Pistol Club ...... cannot take the guns home or your a registered carrier ie: police & some security. I am sure HLC can fill it in with more detail but yes you can own a pistol!

Imitation firearms are illegal, even plastic ones, talking life size type, not little pop guns from the toy store. I had a magnum imitation a few years back. Was made from plastic from a model kit and when it was finished looked identical. Coc it and fill will imitation bullets. Now very illegal.

On classic gun collections, they still need to be registered even if they are not working.

:S Damn, I was looking at getting one or two as a collective thing of the guns I like. I saw this website http://www.collectorsarmoury.com.au/...y/default.html and was considering one but I didn't realise they were illegal. If you can't take it home, thats pretty crappy.

Of course you can take your handguns home. Replicas, depending on how accurate may or may not require registration/licencing but are again, legal.

If anyone is interested in shooting check your local legislation but it has been basicly the same in all states since 1997.

Almost anything can be legally owned by private people in Australia, it just depends on how much you want to spend and how many hoops you want to jump through.

HLC that looks very trick! Love the chrome and the see through grip. I used to use a norinco knock of of the .45 in was fun, but probably built to lower tolerances that the 1911 version. But that looks much more respectable! I want to get back into pistol shooting too - there is a bit of a following out here but I have just let it all slide for a few years

Only been pistol shooting a couple of times but couldnt hit the side of a barn at 10 paces .... needs great skill, more than I could muster and look at pistol shooting totally different. I will stick to rifles and shotguns.

i hate guns . but love pistols . if i was to shoot . it would be a pistol at targets . i awwwwed at the origional pic of that pistal . there is something about them .
but i had no idea you could customise a gun like that . WOW. . being a machinist i love the work of art involved there .
and that rifle is not my cup of tea . however , you cant help but notice the size of that barrel .
