Question Tuning VCT's to run on Premium?

Hey guys

Just wondering if AU VCT's need to be "tuned" to run on 98 Octane fuel?

My dad has a AU1 Ghia (VCT) and we were discussing this because of the possibility of me owning a AU3 XR6 VCT soon

Cheers

Daniel

no special tuning needed if you want to put 98 in, in fact it will give you more power and better fuel economy....so they say. It will run noticeably better with the 98, it may take 2 or 3 tanks...but you will notice.

The so they say is a myth. Your car is setup to run on 91 RON fuel. Without the benefit of a flash tune, putting 98 in does nothing, as the car's original tune does not have any programming built in to cope with running extra RON. The 6's have a knock sensor, but that's to stop pinging if the RON is too low, and does not help if you run a higher RON fuel.

Sure, you may get some better economy from running the 98 due to it being a slightly better burning fuel (higher octane = better burn), but not enough to justify the 12 to 15c price increase.

Ok thanks

So can your local ford mechanic tune it to run on 98ron or does it have to be a special flash tune?

It has to be one of the many tuning things out there; the best of which is the flash tuner (the others just piggy back, and in some cases the Ford ECU learns around the chip, reverting back to what you would've had without the chip)
